I am awaiting delivery of my final peice of kit for my new-ish PC.

Looking around I see it may be possible to get 5.0Ghz out of a 2600k, is this plausible with what I have bought? also does anyone else have this setup and can share info with me regards OC... last time I did this was years ago with my Q6600, and as usual its all changed...

The bits I bought are:
Retail 2600k
Asrock Z68 Pro3
Gelid Tranquillo Rev2
8GB Corsair XMS3 2000Mhz - althogh SB wont run it at 2000.
90GB Corsair Force GT SSD.

My current bits which will be keps
EVGA 570 Superclocked
Coolermaster Shark case
Coolermaster 620 PSU.

Also see the stickys at the top of this sub forum.

With the Gelid you are unlikely to get 5Ghz at sensible temperatures. It also all depends on the chip. You need to take it a step at a time and check stability.

- Do not exceed 1.425v core voltage, doing so could limit lifespan of the CPU
- Aim to keep temperatures below 70c underload if at all possible
- Do not overclock with BCLK, again doing so could limit lifespan of the CPU
- Recommended memory voltage is 1.50v, so make sure to run your memory at 1.50v, higher than 1.60v could limit lifespan of the CPU
- These recommendations come from OcUK and Intel, your warranty is un-affected but we highly recommend you adhere to the above to make sure your CPU lifespan is un-affected
- All Sandybridge CPU's worldwide should be run at the above or lower voltages, no higher!

As above, be realistic, aim between 4.4 and 4.6 to start with, you wont get much more out of that cooler.

A few strange things from this new build.....

I completely forgot it had no IDE channels on the board so the floppy and the DVDR are gone, right pain installing windows after searching the house high and low for a 4GB USB stick.

The instructions in the gelid cooler are shockingly bad, i put the mounting clip on backwards initially...

applying thermal paste has never been so stresfull... google required to remember how much and how to apply.

2 sets of power connectors, old 20 pin and also 8 pin, confused me so i connected both.

No direct CPU power feed so a cable with no home stressed me right out.

And none of my 2 mice work properly in UEFI, Razer lachesis or RAT7.

First use of SSD was ok but windows tweaks was a bit daunting.

Now shes up and running perfect, not overclocking yet, giving it a few days for the thermal paste to settle.

My CPU is at 30c idle which is nice, running prime 95 now for an hour and its at 42c, fan hasnt span up at all.. 8 cores weireded me out at first, wasnt expecting that.

All in all a good job, BF3 at 1080 on max runs at a nice steady 60fps.

You can get 5ghz out of most 2600k yes, but many will need silly volts for that high. Oh and crsnwby, you don't have 8 cores, you still only have 4 mate.
