my brother as a 2600k and its running hot and not performing, but the cost of a new system at this time of year is a no.

is the CPU soldered or tim can it be delidded?

Soldered. Don't bother delidding

Better option is to make sure that all the dust and gunk is cleaned inside the case

Also, what CPU cooler is being used?
cooler is a dark rock pure rock slim, it was clocked to 4.2Ghz but now at stock

Running hot combined with not performing suggests it may be doing something, perhaps investigate what's running in the background before going for more drastic options.

i never thought of something running in the background, i think its the problem as been growing over time, this is why my brother said the cooler or a delid. if its soldered then its not a delid needed

Either the cooler isnt too good, the voltage is too high, or airflow in the case is really low. 2600K run very cool normally, being soldered.

I thought it would just need cooling, my bro mentioned the delidding. I have been told that solder joins can degrade over time. Mum got him the pc on sandy launch so he hammered it for some time now. It could just be getting old and not wanting to run at an OC any more.

Am off college tomorrow so we can pull it apart.

With Intel chips, the way to know if they're soldered is if there's a little hole in the IHS. That's there to let the smoke out from when the flux burns during the soldering process.
No hole, then it's a toothpaste-type TIM.

that not true at all, the 2600k as no hole. but as you can see all say its soldered

thanks for the head up all, i went round last night and opened his case and and i have to say i have never seen anything a disgusting in my life.

we gave it a good clean out and reapplied his TIM, now his system is back happily at 4.2Ghz nice an cool.
he put all the problem he was having down to his CPU but the blower 780ti was probably the worst part in there.

Thanks again people :D
