Hi guys i have an upgrade itch again lol
im stuck between the 4790k and the new 6 core i7 5820k
im a 100% gamer but i do encode and watch a lot of 4k stuff and 4k gaming.
i know the 4790k is abit better speed wise but from what ive read the 5870k aint really far off performance wise and i get 6 cores which tickles my fancy. Im also bored of quad cores aswell so im thinking the change will do me good plus its abit more future proof. what do you guys reckon?

x99 would be good for coding but you have to weigh up the cost of the chip against how frequently you'd be coding and if it;d be worth the premium!

What's your current spec?

Tbh im more gaming then anything else just very light coding.

Intel Core I7 3770K @ 3.7

GigaByte Z77-D3H Mobo.

Galax GTX 980 SOC GFX

G-Skill Trident X PC3-19200 2400mhz 16GB

1TB Sata 3 Hard drive

850watt corsair psu

No SSD? Get a big fast SSD, overclock the CPU (if you haven't) and you're laughing. The 4790k isn't a massive upgrade over the 3770k at all, and if you only encode every now and then, then the outlay for Haswell-e just isn't worth it.

Yea i know i need an ssd at some point lol.
but dont you think the 6 core is good for future proofing tho and 4k stuff?
Thing is this will be my last upgrade for a long time as im losing more job so tbh i need the more future proof upgrade on that basis what u guys reckon?

I have just got from the MM a 3770k and my 3570k has gone to my son. The 3770k I have overclocked to 4.5Ghz with a voltage increase offset of 0.02v. This is on a Z77 UD5H board.
My Sons 3570k is on the same board as you OP and is running at 4.4Ghz.

Coupled with SSD drives, 16GB of RAM and a KFA2 980 GTX SOC I see no practical reason to change to anything at the moment, regardless of any itches...!

I transcode or encode stuff now and again and if it is a big set of files I will arrange to do that when I do not need the PC for much else or overnight, but only if it is a long job - seldom done these days.

As noted if you haven't overclocked then consider that. And if you haven't got an SSD then consider those as well.

EDIT: Noting your situation, re job etc, even more important that you save your money...! Keep posting and look forward to getting access to the MM and wait for the next humongous launch by Intel etc and then go and grab some bargains from the early adopters with insatiable appetites needing their fix, works well :)

There's really no point in changing, but if you can do it by spending the minimum, then yes, do it.

I've just picked up a 4770k with a water block to replace my 2600k and will be buying a new board too - the 2600k & current board will cover 80% of my spend for the new gear once sold!

Moved from a 3770k to z87 myself, and tbh for gaming it was a bit of a silly move. Performance difference is so small.

Hmm choices choices lol.
im doing this last upgrade in secret b4 the wife finds out lol.
she wont let me do it again
which is why i have to decide between the 2 cpus now
do you think the 5820k is more justified then the 4790

You're doing what I do, try to find a reason to get the one you've already set your heart on!!

Look at the benches and then make your choice:

@aachil Really all that you wanted is for someone to green light your already made up mind to scratch that itch, isn't it...?! ;)

lol

if your heart's already set on upgrading, then just do it (as long as you have the funds).
don't want your kids going hungry now do we? lol (sarcasm btw)

Agree about an ssd, difference is night and day. For me personally they're the only pc component in recent years that offer a really noticeable performance improvement. Intels mainstream cpu's of late have offered very little improvement.

Hahaha yea im just upgrading because i can lol.
the wife and kids will live haha.
atm being honest im edging for the 5820k just for that little bit of future proofing since i know i wont be upgrading for at least 2 years lol

Open another bank account in secret and put all your current upgrade monies in it, and then keep adding to it. When the next big thing comes out, scratch that itch like never before. Book a day off work, have everything delivered to work beforehand, leave for work in the morning, pick up the kit, go back home and fit it all in :D

Just make sure you keep it all in the same case, and that the missues isn't home that day, or you're dead meat

Voice of experience here ;)
