If the software your using supports hyper threading id go for the 4790k due to the extra threads.

thanks guys... thats what I was leaning towards

I would have loved a i7 6700k, but the price scales too high when you start adding the mb and memory

Cheaper to go X99 mate ;)

Not a bad shout, for content creation type stuff such as editing, rendering the 6 core 5820k is hard to ignore. Primarily a gamer here with a 5820k that replaced a 4790k setup. Sidegrade for games at present but the extra cores could be more useful in future.

Bit of a digression (sorry OP) but how have your found moving to x99? Bug is biting again and I'm finding myself adding x99 to my basket :rolleyes:

Pretty decent mate, clocked at 4.5ghz I'm seeing no difference in games compared to the 4790k at 4.7ghz. Same volts on both but the 5820k runs so much cooler. One core at 64c, the 4790k would range from 70-75c across the cores.

wow...so much temptation

while I would prefer the 6 cores over the 4 cores, I do intend to run at stock speed (havent got the time to mess about overclocking), so the clock speed of 3.3 over 4 is a big factor I feel.

also the £240+ price difference for the 5820k + MB + memory, over the 4790k is a biggy

For light work the 4970k should actually boosts to 4.4 and only go down to 4 when all 4 cores are been utilized.

I've never actually tested this but if it does then it should make loading programs and stuff even quicker.

At stock the 4790k boosts to 4.4 on one core, its a great CPU as I owned two and liked them. Aside from running hot.

My brother has a 4670 and rendering and that kinda stuff between the two mine is so much quicker, that and mine has an overclock, his is stock. But for large stuff he tends to use mine as it's quicker.. and I rarely use my PC!

been thinking about it some more, I might go with the 5820, just working out the spec at the minute... can anyone recommend a motherboard and ram (32gb) to go with it?

budget for cpu, mb and ram is around the £650 mark
