Hi guys. Well My mobo is asus maximus ranger .. I bought these components like a week ago.. They are really fresh. My cpu is currently operating at 4.00 ghz .. I want to overclock it to 4.2 ghz without tweaking the voltage. So is it possible to do it without voltage settings? Can someone help me on that? Actually i dont know the bios settings& menus and tweaks . Just a few of them if anyone knows about the bios oc settings of this mobo , i'd be grateful to be guided.. Thank you

Ive managed to get 4.4GHz out of my 4790k and im looking to overclock more. i increased the volts at first by 0.50 i think because on stress tests my PC would shut off in seconds. after getting to 4.4 overclock i then took the volts back down to the stock ones and it worked fine with the overclock so its just a matter of testing and stuff. I would try not to increase the volts too much as it can decrease the chips life span. The bios setting are usually called CPU CLOCK RATIO for the overclock and then VCORE for the cpu voltage. so just keep creeping up the volts by 0.5's until you get a stress test when your pc doesnt shut down and then try taking the volts back down but this may not work all the time so you can just leave the volts but down go too high :)

Also download the soft ware called cpu-z too check the overclock is applied, also you core temps or some other temperature statistics software. create custom curves for your fans if you have corsair link or something like that so your fans work faster at temps you set. and also a stress test software like aid64, prime 95 or linX. i use linX as it is the one that doesnt get my temps stupidly high. remember the temps you get in a stress test will never be reached when using the PC as it will never be under that amount of stress. just run all cpu-z stress test and core temps at the same time to chec your overclocks. you can find goo dwebsites online showing how to easily overclock by searching how to overclock a cpu etc. thats how i got started

If you upped your vcore by 0.50 you're lucky it still works!

Just for the record...1.3v vcore is definitely safe.

Do not bump your vcore by .5 increments, you need .05 and my board only registers 0.12 changes.

+0.50 vcore = probable death to your cpu.

Thank you so much for your suggestions and help guys. Im gonna try to hit 4.2 ghz without increasing the voltage.. If that would be stable, I will try to hit it to 4.2 by upping the V by 0.5 .. Is it sound good?

I must admit I'm relieved to see you back.

Please be careful.

I'm not sure why you don't just start at 4.4 but whatever you want, it's your cpu.

Personally I would aim higher to start off with.

I went straight for 4.6ghz at 1.248. It booted but wasn't stable.

Theyre 4.4 stock speed aint they? Mine was at least. I just started at 1.2v and then just kept going till it was unstable which was 4.7, then just upped vcore to 1.25 and kept going untill it was unstable at 4.8 and so on. I would suggest setting LLC or Vdroop to a high setting also. Someone with a asus board can probably tell ya where to do this. You might need to set a manual CPU input voltage also, my was at 1.75 on auto which was fine fore me but i turned it up to 1.8 just to make sure.

Just keep your temps below 80 under full load.

Well some people says that the cpu is already turbo boosted to 4.4ghz when under load.. Im not sure about that i checked the asus multicore enhancment and it was set to auto the other option was disable. I tried to increase it to 4.4 ghz but nothing was changed when i booted the cpu..

Hi, I have a similar question relating to the 4790k. I have recently purchased one and am thinking about overlocking once my rig is complete (still waiting on mobo and for nvidia to work out what they are doing with the 970's as i have one sat on my desk). I've read a lot about the advantages of delidding intel cheaps but my question is it nessessary for overclocking and if so and what point would i have to think of delidding. i.e would the chip run at 4.6 but any higher would need delidding?

Delidding is only for those extreme overclockers who are eeking out every little bit of speed they can. It does help a great deal with temps, but theese chips only hit very high temps under certain stress programs. Programs that Intel themselves don't reccomend. Another issue with delidding, you loose your warranty. So you gotta ask yourself, can I afford to replace the chip if it is destroyed while attempting to delid.
