so i already have an i7 4770k running at 4.5ghz it requires 1.25v to get that stable wich isnt to bad
it runs a little warmer than i would like when im putting heavy load through it like video editing/rendering

im waiting for the 4790k to be available on overclockers, what do you guys think? i want atleast 4.5ghz out of it and id like it to be on less volts and run cooler

apparently intel has spent a lot of time working on improving its thermal design and overclocking i hope its paid off

You're going to pay a bunch of cash for a CPU that potentially runs at exactly the same speed as the one you have now, just because your current one runs within Intel's recommended operating temperature threshold?

Makes sense.

it runs warmer than id like it to and thats just that and i would sell my 4770k making most of my money back... it was a simple question, no need to be rude

I'd stick with what you've got, at the very least until more reviews are out. Even if it is designed for a better OC, you'll still be playing the silicon lottery.

I'm not being rude :) I'm trying to work out why you'd care about lowering the operating temperature if the CPU is not throttling.

The CPU is designed to run at 100c max. If yours is running at say 83c, then you still have some headroom. It isn't going to make any difference if a 4790K runs at 73c.

Wait for some OCing reviews first. 4.5Ghz is a good OC and I dont think getting the same OC on a refresh chip will actually give you any performance

I have a similar 4770k @ 1.25v and 4.5GHz 24/7. Yes it gets to high 70s in temps on benching using an AIO.

Unless the 4970k is virtually guaranteed to get to 5GHz+, I can't see myself swapping up as the performance gain will be virtually unnoticeable. At worst, if you get a 4970k that sucks and only does the same clocks as your 4770k, you will pay intel to effectively end up in the same position.

Wait for some reviews from users and the usual sites.

It's not really like Intel to release CPU's overclocked to their very limits so with a 4.4ghz stock boost I would expect the 4790K to do at least 4.8ghz stable as a norm (hopefully more!), then there's the temperature improvements.

From what I've seen of DC so far it's not like FX9370/FX9590 where they've simply whacked the volts up and ignored TDP, the chips look to be of a much higher quality.

I've completely avoided IB/HW due to the TIM issue but DC looks every bit as good as SB was.
