I have had my i7 4790k since December 2015 along with 16GB DDR3 and a single GTX 980Ti. I game a 4k resolutions with my Acer 4k monitor and to be fair my CPU and GPU does a pretty decent job with the games I play. As I start to play more recent titles though I do have to start knocking down the graphics settings to low/medium to get somewhere near 60fps. I have been considering an upgrade recently and with the new Ryzen's on the way im wondering if it will be worthwhile upgrading to an 1800x? I want my system to be good for the next few years. I am exploring possibly upgrading my GPU later this year to a 1080Ti also. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks for the comments guys, from what you all say it might be best I upgrade my GPU rather than cpu, ram and mobo. Possibly to a 1080 Ti which if rumours are true could possibly come to same price as mentioned parts.

OP, what overclock are you running your 4790K at?

Its stock at the moment. If truth be told I feel too inexperienced to attempt to OC it myself. I would like to OC it though. I have adequate cooling to OC though, I have a cooler master 212 evo.

ive decided to go down the OC route on my i7 4790k and possibly get a gtx1080Ti depending on preview coming soon.

I want to thank you all for your comments, its appreciated. So what I have decided to do is overclock my 4790k. I have just purchased a corsair h100i v2 AIO cooler to help with the OC'ing. I will then see how it goes and maybe upgrade my 980ti to a 1080ti shortly after release. I just need to research or ask someones kind help on how to OC my 4790k. With installing hardware I'm very confident and capable, but with software/OC'ing I'm clueless.

I would start by setting your

clock multiplier (46) 4.6ghz
Vcore to 1.25v
Uncore multiplier to 40
Input voltage to 1.75 (don't confuse this with vcore!!)

And see if it's stable and play with settings from there)

many thanks. My AIO is arriving today so tonights task for me is to install that, then hopefully this weekend have an attempt at OC. Expect to see a lot of m ehere asking questions then!!

ok guys, I haven't touched my CPU and never overclocked it, ok? I have just checked with CPU-Z and my Core speed is sitting at 4398.97mhz most of the time, now and then it will drop to 4299mhz or 4199mhz but it mainly stays at 4398.97mhz @ 1.262V. I assume then that my CPU is running in its turbo state most of the time. Is it worthwhile overclocking???? (I now have a Corsair H100i V2 liquid cooler installed)

Ive joined the OC clan! A very nice and helpful chap who is a friend of a friend has just overclocked my i7 4790k to 4.6ghz @ 1.25v and runs perfectly stable.
