I need to upgrade my pc its ancient lol :P,

so im looking at those two cpus and im having mixed thoughts on them.

the PC is going to be for nothing but high end gaming.

I saw the i7 5820k and know its a pretty sweet cpu, im not tied to a budget so i want the best cpu i can get for gaming and im making sure its going to last.

im throwing 2 watercooled gtx980ti cards with the asus x99 deluxe motherboard if thats any help.

Just need some help to get the best out of it all

thanks in advance :D

If it's for nothing other than gaming, personally with the lack of utilisation of threaded cores in gaming currently, I'd go with an i5 6600k, but in answer to your question, I'd go with the 5820k, the 5960x won't last too much longer as a viable gaming CPU than the 5820k will, don't think it's a viable choice really.

Now doesn't seem to be the right time to upgrade either, if pascal is as good as the hype, it might be worth waiting a little longer.

The 5820k IMO is Intel's most responsibly priced CPU. And I am including everything when I say that, Skylake, remaining DC stock etc.

I would also say that it's probably not the cores of the 5960x causing the FPS gains in gaming (as small as they are) it's probably down to the fact it has more cache.

Quite frankly it's absolutely ridiculous to buy a 5960x for gaming. It's probably the worst value product Intel sell.

I can really see core support coming sooner rather than later though. Intel now offer 8c 16t CPUs and it won't be long before AMD are offering something similar, so with DX12 it may finally be time to see core support in games as well as other apps.

I still wouldn't buy a 5960x though. Not unless you were running something rather more serious than a mere gaming PC.

Gotta agree with Andy, 5820k is a well priced great all round cpu. You have the extra cores/threads for stuff that utilise it. And its a very good chip for gaming. Mine replaced a 4790k @4.7ghz. Clocked to 4.5ghz I'm seeing similar gaming performance but with much lower load temps.
