Hi all,

After much research on nthis and other forums, last week I put together my first rig consisting of the following;

i7 860
ASUS P7P55D-E Pro
4GB Corsair XMS DDR3 1600C9
H50 Cooler with stock fan / TIM
Antec 902

Using guides here and elsewhere I tried my very first overclocking and have managed to acheive LinX stable at 3.9GHz with the following settings;

21x 185

Vcore 1.25
IMC 1.20
DRAM 1.65
PLL 1.8625
PCH 1.1250

(So long as these voltages work and I'm LinX stable I guess they're ok?)

HT Enabled
Speedstep Enabled

As this is my first ever attempt ot O/C I'm pleasantly surprised how staright forward it's been (so far!) but in an addictive quest for for more speed I have a few questions I hope you guys can help with.....?

1/ My Max temps when running LinX (and Prime95 for that matter) are usually around 71 - 67 - 65 - 66 as measured by Real Temp. Is the variation of up to 6 degress between cores acceptable? I'm worried that by adding more VCore I'm going to punch through 80 quickly with Core 1 whilst still having some headroom with the remainding 3? (I have set myself a limit of 80 for my own peace of mind!)

2/ Would reseating the H50 help with the temps? I have undone the screws and reseated but there were no noticeable differences in the temps. I thought maybe the reason Core1 was running hotter could be to do with uneven TIM?

3/ When running Prime95 is it normal for different workers to progress through the tests at differing speeds? After two hours, one worker was about 2 minutes ahead of the last (ie 1-2 tests ahead). Does this have any relation to the question above....could it be that one core is "working better/faster" thus giving the higher temp on that core? Is this normal?

Sorry to ask so many questions in one thread but I don't seem able to find the answers doing the normal searches despite having spent the best part of the day looking (the wife's not happy!!)

Temperature difference across cores is normal and worker threads finishing at different times is normal as well :)

Thanks, that's at least put my mind at rest!

I guess my follow on question then is whether those temps seem ok with that O/C and the H50 on such a low VCore? I know the H50 is nothing special but I read it should be about on par with high end air coolers. I also not others running their 860s at Vcore 1.32-1.35 on air, with temps mid 70s. I did a quick try at 1.28125V and the temps were already at 77-71 on LinX.

Yes, 80 is my absolute limit in LinX......I believe in "normal" working conditions (Photoshop, FSX and maybe a bit of video editing) I'm unlikely to see such temps?

I know there's an H50 thread (am slowly working my way through it!) but if 70 is fine at 1.25 then how are people able to get to 4.1 on air without going over mid 70s? Open ended question I know but I'm keen to learn and like I say...have an addictive need for speed :D

i'm at 195x21 which is 4.1ghz my temps reach 90c under prime! ha.. but the way i think of it... its never gona hit 90c when gaming/browsing general use etc.

i also need 1.392vcore to get it stable.

Thanks Chronic.....interesting to see what is needed for 4.1 (and the resulting temperatures!)

As you have an 860 and the H50 (ableit with a different case and MOBO) do you have any results from earlier testing at lower speeds? Be interested to compare your temps at 3.9 with mine. Did you use the stock TIM?

i dont have any results but i could get u some now, my temps hit 90c under prime (12hours) i'm using an antec 900 ultimate gaming case which is not to much different from yours, i realy doubt my chip could hit the same temps/voltages as urs stable just by lowering BLK by 10! maybe you just got lucky with your chip...

Yes....would certainly be interested to know what temps you get at 3.9 on the H50 seeing as our setups are failry similar.

I've just been reading another thread you replied to regarding the 860 O/C and seems that the voltages I'm getting stable with are relatively low?

I presume running LinX for 20 tests with GFlops of 48ish at 3072MB RAM are sufficient to prove stability? I will also run a 12 hour Prime test when I get a chance

Ok, thanks. I have Prime 95, just need time at home to run it!

Thinking about it, I wonder if what I actually need to know is what temps you would get at the same voltage as me to see if my cooling is ok? For example, rather than saying I get to 70C on 3.9 maybe I should be saying I get to 70C loaded at at 1.25Vcore?

Out of interest, what are your idle temps like? Mine are about 27-31C with room ambient 21C.......sound ok for the H50?

I've just got a complex that I've not seated my h50 correctly or that I need to apply some other TIM! Knowing my luck though I'll do that and the temps will go up lol!

Also, how tightly do you screw your h50 down? Mines done until
it requires a little force to turn screws anymore

Many thanks for all your help guys.....makes life a little easier for us new guys eager to learn!
