Hey chaps,

Would you say that an i7 860 overclocked to 3.4Ghz with HT on with these idle temps are not really all that good considering i have a Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B with 2x Scythe Kaze Jyuni fans and using Shin Etsu thermal paste.

Im just not impressed with the idle temps.

i mean look at core 3 high temp idle 55c?

Well these are my temps for about a min into prime 95...its just un-aceptable imo, considering this is suppose to be a good cooler.

I think if i let prime 95 run it would hit the TJMax and shut down the system.

Whats your ambient? Although after 1min i'd say yea thats bad, IBT would likely hit Tjmax quick! . Reapply TIM and reseat your sink.

Not sure on Ambient as i have no thermometer,But its not all that warm in the house and i have my windows open.

But yeah after about a min it shoots to those temps,I dont even get to test 2 as you can see. :/

EDIT: @ScratchFive according to cpuz the voltage is 1.360..its on auto in bios for voltage, maye this is the reason its so warm,But i thought the cpu would only consume the power it needed?

auto in bios sometimes sets the voltage way too high, I think this is part or all of the reason for the excessive heat.

try reading this http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17612922

and set the voltage manually, you will get much, much better temps and probably a better clock too!

edit: the CPU has a resistance that, while not fixed, varies within limits dependent on load, temperature and other factors. Putting more voltage across this means more power is consumed (P=V^2/R)

i used to have that cpu before i got my 2600k. the temps where about 40 idle on 4ghz. but i had a crap cooler then. the temps on my 2600k at 5 ghz with my h80 are 65 on full load.

Okay chaps it looks like i will put a bit more effort into my over clocking and actually mess around with the Voltages this time rather than leave it on Auto.

I know you cant give me a definitive answer,But what would be the minimum voltage for say 3.4 in your opinion?

I might turn off HT aswell and go for a higher overclock,I only game and internet on this system so i dont think HT would make much diffrence.

The settings i used to use for on that cpu for near 3.9 where as i remember.

Cpu Ratio 21
Speedstep off
Bclk 184
Pci Freq 103
Voltage 1.35
imc voltage 1.175
dram voltage 1.65
C1e off
qpi auto
cpu pll, i remember i had it on the one before it went to red.
pch voltage auto
load line on
ht on

So 1.35 was plenty for me for 3.9. so really i wouldnt think you would need more than 1.3 or even 1.28 for just 3.4 mate
