Trying to help a friend with his overclock but I'm a bit stumped. Running prime or Burn test his CPU seems to be throttling (dropping to 1.6GHz) at about 70C, as far as I was aware these chips aren't supposed to throttle until 99C?

Things we've done:

Update BIOS
Disable Speedstep/C1E etc

The motherboard doesn't have the most advanced overclocking options, however it has all the basics and I can't see why it should be throttling so early.

We're at 1.32 Vcore, 1.65V on the RAM (OCZ special ops). I've already looked around on the web for solutions but none of the suggestions seem to have helped so far. Using 22 multi and 182 BCLK.

Also please don't point out that the Tcase Intel spec for the chip is 73C, The core temp is not the same as the Tcase temp, Tcase is nowhere near what's supposed to be the throttling temp.

edit: tried using Realtemp, HW monitor, Coretemp, Speed fan to monitor temps, all say the same.

Temp is not the only thing which can cause it to throttle; if the board senses the chip is pulling too much power it will also throttle the cpu. On some boards you can alter the limit when this kicks in too.

Have you checked the vcore using cpuz?

If this isn't the case you may have a faulty limiter or maybe the board has a very conservative limit.

I tried finding a way to contact you on the forum but couldent find any, so sorry for writing in this ancient thread.
But I was curious if you eveer found a solution for this? i have the same cpu and motherboard with the same throttling issue at around 70 degrees.

Redmint.
I see this thread is old, but did you ever find a solution to this strange 70C throttle? Have the same cpu and similare asus card( P7H55-M) with same issue.
