I7 8700 clock speeds

Hi

Need a bit of help, recently purches I7 8700 but I notice the my clock speeds will drop down to 900mhz on idle is this normal for that CPU? or there is something wrong as the base clock should be 3200mhz

It's speedstep - when idle the cores will clock down. Pay attention to both core loads and min/max in your picture - they explain this perfectly. If you don't want it clocking down disable speedstep in your bios. Speedstep will save power and generate less heat when the cpu isn't in use as it adjusts voltage and frequency of the cpu cores.
 
Ah thanks for quick answer, I had a spare mobo z270 laying around that I fitted this i7 to so not much adjustment as it come off some sort of prebuild pc, maybe need to invest in another mobo
