i got a b-grade 11900f offer accepted. is it worth upgrading my 8700k to this, i already have a suitable motherboard with an i3 cpu.. if not i will just use it as a gaming server.

It is an upgrade, especially for applications where it is enormously faster, but 13th-14th gen K CPUs are significantly higher performing in games than 11th gen, so I wouldn't select the 11900K if you're likely to have a newer Ryzen 7000 or 13-14th gen alternative soon.

i wasnt planning on a major upgrade, i got it for £100 and also 32gb ram for £39.99 , and i can sell the i3 for a few quid

It’s pretty much the chip a 8900K would have been. A bit weak on cache and runs hot. Performance is a bit all over the place. Best case it’s close to a 5900X, worse case it’s more like a 3700X.

CPU arrived , DOA PC doesnt post. Mobo on latest BIOS, but nothing. put i3 back in fine. also looked tatty in an old cpu tray with labelled pulled off and had thermal paste residue on it

damn. gutted. £100 would've been a steal if it was a working chip
have you checked on intel website if the warranty is still in date? could do a cheeky RMA if there's still the intel warranty lol

looks like intel warranty applies to boxed cpus not tray

Sorry to hear, that's a real shame. Out of interest what motherboard is it?

Better luck this time - I'll be interested in your impressions if/when you get it going, as I'm still running my 8700k@5ghz as it seems to be perfectly fine for my 3080fe system as I'm only on a 1440p 60hz monitor

well this one works, it will be a while before it goes in my main PC though, swapping out mobo etc... I will still be keeping the 8700k in another system its a great cpu.

If you doing a full system swap and not just a cpu swap as first stated. Then this was a very silly upgrade. You could have got a lot better cpu for the same sort of money.

i already had the z490 motherboard in another PC. so i upgraded the CPU in that to the i9. (ie ive only had to buy the cpu nothing more)
