Offered a i7 920 2.66ghz with ASUS P6T-SE mobo and CORSAIR 6GB 1600mhz triple channel memory for cheap.
I currently have trinity A-10 in my case at the moment.(Not using the APU :p but a forzzer III 7850)
Is it worth me selling the a-10 and mobo and putting the i7 in it instead,If i OC the i7 how much of a upgrade is it.

Ta

Go go for it, my i7 920 at 4.2GHz/12gb ram/GPU 6970, still plays the latest games no problems at all. Depending how Haswell performs, l might upgrade or just get a better GPU.:)

Ok i will do. Im going to water cool to as have most of the parts except the water block. I might sell the motherboard mainly because no usb3 and my storm stryker has usb3 ports on the front. Was thinking of Gigabyte X58A-OC.

Hi again, my mobo is a GIG.X58 UD5 rv2, cracking mobo if you want l'll give you the bios settings for 4.2GHz to use as a guide., using cpu-z > cpu volts 1.31v full load. :)
PS +1 for watercooling one of the best things l ever did to my pc. :D

Agreed, i swapped my 920 out for the spec in sig. Identical performance in games, another silly setter sidegrade lol:D. Still kept my i7 930 though.

could skip it and just go z77,x58 is good but does suffer a lot from mb squeal and no native intel sata3

if thats unimportant then buy it

I had 4 920s they are great CPUs, all clocked to 4Ghz one of them was happy at 4.4Ghz, i wish i had kept it rather than changing, the main reason i changed was the cost of the motherboards/RAM at the time, AMD X6 (with the promise of Piledriver changing the world :)) convinced me to swap.

I have no intention of getting rid of my X58 systems, in the near future I will upgrade them to using custom w/cooled setups. They are both really good overclockers and the only thing holding them back are the corsair H series coolers on them.

My i7 980 can reach 4.6ghz with low volts, unfortunately using a Corsair H70 cooler things can get a bit toasty. When I get a proper w/c loop on it I want to see how high it will go and maybe give some of the SB-E systems a run for their money.:D

As the 900 series are quite cheap now, you can assemble a pretty powerful system for very little outlay. The i7 930 and motherboard cost me £140.00 about 7 months ago, (£90.00 for the cpu and £50.00 for the board ,already had 6gb of ocz reaper ram). Seen the cpu's go for a lot less now. Tbh, there are times i wish id kept the 920 as well, as it was a pretty decent stable clocker.

do you normally control the voltage manually to reduce heat? i've just had everything on auto except the BLK, which i've increased to achieve the overclock.

What board do you have smiler? You can use dvid or offset to reduce or add voltage at load,I had a golden 920 that only used 1.23v for 4.2ghz,but with a ud5 board I'd set CPU v to normal and +0.0750v in dvid, that way CPU downclocks at idle still, with a fixed voltage it won't and auto tends to overvolt

well the 920,mobo 6gb ram and a CORSAIR H50 is costing me 160 witch i thought was a ok price. Sell the mobo and h50 hopfully get 70-80 and put it towards the Gigabyte X58A-OC.
Im selling my a-10 to a friend with mobo and ram and only loosing out on 10 from what i paid 3 months ago.
Also will stick another 6gb ram towards it the new build :)

Cheers for the help guys.

Gigabyte X58A-OC thats a good board to get,the marvell sata3 ports on that are as fast as the intel sata3 found on sb/ib boards,so youll see full speeds with ssd's

For reference, I use my pc for gaming and general browsing etc... And my Q9650 @ 4.3 and DDR2 ram is still good enough for the latest games, seriously. Sure current gen stuff is faster but not £000s faster for gaming. Editing videos or photo work then sure the newer and more powerful the better.
