i7 920 1st generation

I never knew about setting the voltage to normal and using dvid instead, ive been overclocking my 920 with just the vcore. For some reason using dvid instead creates all kinds of odd motherboard squeeks/whines, if i go back to using my old method then its completely silent - something to consider for those suffering with coil whine on x58.

The title indicates that it is a c0 stepping which needed more volts iirc.

ebay info said do.
FPO/BATCH: 3938A262

Yup just checked the cpu-z jpg. DO stepping 5.
Good news is he has not even had it clocked past 2.8 since he has owned it (if hes being honest that is)

try turning off c1e in the bios,if you have win7 use balanced power saving profile in windows, that stopped the coil whine for me

dvid works verywell,i was stable at 4.2ghz with it

Hi again, my mobo is a GIG.X58 UD5 rv2, cracking mobo if you want l'll give you the bios settings for 4.2GHz to use as a guide., using cpu-z > cpu volts 1.31v full load. :)
PS +1 for watercooling one of the best things l ever did to my pc. :D

I'd take your settings mate, same chip and mobo. Can't get past 3.7GHz without going over 75C on full load.

My i7 920 is a C step. I friggin love it.. Sure mine needs roughly 1,37v to be stable at 4ghz but it is still able to run at stock speeds with only 1,00 volt through it.

Besides that after i OCed it to 4ghz and did a few tweaks here and there to more than just the Vcore it doesnt care what you throw at it anymore.. Not even BF3 64 player servers packed to the limit.

If you look at the Clock for Clock performance its a very strong CPU even today. It makes Ivy look a bit dissappointing IMHO. I even have Sata 6.0 and usb 3 through my asus sabertooth x58 Mb.
