I recently brought up an issue in the general hardware forum regarding my RAM. When checking my RAM speeds in CPU-Z I noticed that the CPU was at 2.8Ghz

Can anyone suggest a reason for why my processor reports speeds of 2.8Ghz on CPU-Z? Is it due to intel turbo boost as I have never overclocked the chip?

Thanks for replies :)

Even though it will make overclocking easier, it does provide a nice speedup. Just not on most benchmarks. Old games love it though.

Here's a quote from maximumpc that explained it well to me:

The elevator explanation for Turbo Mode is that it automatically overclocks the core (or cores) in use when it senses lightly threaded loads on the other cores. It is, of course, far more complicated than that. It’s the free performance in applications that won’t take full advantage of all eight threads that will be available in a Core i7 CPU (and part of the pragmatic view that went into the design of Core i7). Even as Intel pushes for more and more cores, it knows that the majority of applications and games won’t see a linearly scaled performance boost from additional computing cores. So why not just overclock the one core that the program uses?

PS. Go overclock! I have you hardware but slower memory and managed to overclock to almost 3.5G on a stock cooler before temps held me back. With turbo on.

You might want to check for all info needed for our board on one page:

Ah right thanks, I have very little knowledge on overclocking so when it comes to it i'll have to do some reading but i'm gonna check that page out now.

I'm probably going to get a watercooled system of some sort wether it be a H50 or a custom one. Although my antec freezer pro is fairly good :). Thanks for the links :).
