i7 920 and H50 confusing temp issue

Hi,
I've recently looked at my temps and found the processor to be running hot.

Idle:50C
Load:90C (prime95)

I only have a small overclock (3.4Ghz) but the temps were consistent if I set the processor to stock or higher (3.8Ghz).

So I reseated the H50 a number of times and that did not help initially. I then removed all the thermal paste and applied some Arctic Silver 5.

Temps after Arctic Silver applied (I only did a small test before going to bed):

Idle:40C
Load:75C (prime95)

I'm going to do more testing fiddling but was wondering if someone could give me some help to find the problem?

Case:600T
Cooler:H50
Fans:
Notua 120mm Push Pull into case (in exhause slot)
2 120mm on top of the case.

75c load presuming at 3.8ghz? If so that might be about right, the 1366 chips are known to be hot runners and the H50 isn't exactly the best cooler in the world ;)
 
Hi m8, use to have a H50 2xAkasa Vipers blowing out >i7920 @ 4.2GHZ temps were idle cores around 34'c > load P95 about 75'c, so your temps are a little on the high side, try with the H50 blowing out don't forget temps are up due to summer coming in. So you will be blowing in more hot air them in the winter. How much Tim did you apply on the CPU? Cables tidy not blocking the are flow? What voltage are putting through the CPU?

I've come home and ran a test.

CPU @3.0Ghz
Prime95 running for 10mins.

Load temp: 85C.

That is too high in my opinion. Any advice on what I can do?

edit: It seems to get back down to idle temp (45C) quite quickly which is a sign that the H50 has a good contact. Right?

Have a listen to the pump up close to make sure its humming away softly, as they do fail occasionally.

In addition, the pump won't work correctly if its not getting full power from the motherboard. Check that the pump is connected to a motherboard fan header that is definitely giving it full power. i.e. if its connected to a header labeled FAN on the motherboard, then its possible that the motherboard is lowering the voltage depending on the bios fan speed options. Its an unlikely scenario if the cpu temps are that high, but you may have entered some sort of manual bios setting for fan speed on that particular header. Its safer to connect the H50 pump directly to the PSU with a 3pin fan -> molex adapter (if you need one), or a motherboard fan header that can't be bios controlled.

Check that the mounting hasn't come loose or lob-sided.

Finally, check for a leak. Its unlikely with these closed systems, but still a possibility.

These closed loop systems do loose some efficiency over the years. They slowly loose liquid over time. Mine's not quite as good as it was after 3 years service, but nowhere near as severe as yours.
 
Hi, the pump needs 12v to run properly, check your manual for a 12v header, your fans go to the CPU header as they are PWN and they will ajust speed as your temps change.
 
The pump is connected to the PWR_FAN connector on the motherboard - I've checked the bios and the all auto control is turned off. It also shows that the pump running at 1400RPMs which according to Corsair is normal.

I haven't spotted any leaks and the I've reseated it a number of times.

I've ordered a H100 which should arrive today so I will see if that makes a difference.
 
A quick update. I've installed the h100 into my case.

One thing I noticed was that one side of the H50 was covered in layers of dust (push pull blowing air into the case) and this may have contributed the problems.

Anyway, I'm now running the H100 and temps are as follows.

CPU @3.4Ghz

Idle:39C
Load:70C
