Hello mate (mates ))))) I'm obviously NEw here...

I'm building a base Nahelem system and wanted some advice on the choice for my build, as my welcome seems to be wearing "thin" at the other forum....

Anyways here's the specs...

Any reccommendations????? Your input is very much appreciated...

(BX80601920)(i7-920)(SOCKET LGA 1366) CORE i7 2.66Ghz PROCESSOR

(GA-EX58-EXTREME) (INTEL X58 + ICH10R CHIPSET) SOCKET LGA 1366 WITH QPI 6.4 GT/s

Corsair XMS3 Tri Channel 3GB PC10666 DDR3 Memory - 1333MHz, 3072MB (3 x 1024MB)

(OCZ600SXS) STEALTHXSTREAM 600W POWER SUPPLY

(BARRACUDA 7200.10) 80GB SERIAL ATA II (8MB) (7200RPM)

(CL-P0114) BIG TYPHOON (SOCKET 775 & AMD K7/K8/A

(RC-690-KKN1) (BLACK) CM 690 HIGH PERFORMANCE ATX CASE

(These are the titles of the products from a Canadian Computer store)

Thanks mate :):)

Welcome to the forums :)

The spec looks ok, aprt from the HDD is a bit on the small side, especially if youre playing games, and soeakin g of which, you havent specced a graphics card :)

Palit Radeon 4850 512 GDDR 3

Can the Gigabyte Extreme Perform???? Or is this unknown yet??????

Thanks .....

Oh, and the HDD is just to house Windows...I have a 1 tBb External hard drive and an old 200 G IDE hard drive

Oh and just so you know I'm going to the Nahelem from this JOKE:

Celeron 2.4 @ 2.6
PC3200 400 MHZ 2 G Ram
Asus p4p800SE
400 Watt Power Supply
Radeon X1650 Pro AGP Version
WD 160 GB Burned Out Hard Drive

You might want to loose the older & slower HDs. Thanks to newer technologies, current crop of HDs are much faster (see here).

Don't think the Big Typhoon fits socket LGA 1366.

If your planning on forking out for an i7 system, then like it's been said lose the old tech hard drives, they will only slow the system down. Get a samsung F1 drive, the 640gb version is fast and cheap for what you get.

That CPU cooler won't fit the socket, you need something like

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...21&name=Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 (Socket LGA1366)

It isn't out yet and ocuk don't show any others with the LGA1366 socket.

What is it your wanting to do with this setup, as you may be cheaper going for a core 2 system, which will be just as quick and cost a lot less.

Well I want speed here folks... I use the old celeron and I am embarrassed at how slow it is to even my parent's computers...

My other choice was this

Q9650 3.0 GHZ
OCZ 1066 4 GB Ram
P5Q Deluxe Motherboard
600 Watt OCZ Power Supply
80 GIG Baracudda Hard Drive
Big Typhoon Cooler
CM 690 Computer Case
Palitt Radeon 4850 512 GDDR3

This was about 50.00 More, but my original choice before I got "talked" into the Core i7.....

Seem Better?????

Cause isn't the CLOCK RATE faster /??????? 3.0 GHZ vs 2.66 GHZ /??????

The Akasa AK 967 Nero CPU cooler (in stock here at OC's) will fit the core i7 LGA1366 socket

I agree with the Hard Drive comments, even if you're just looking for a drive to use as a bootable with windows on, jumping from a 80GB Hard drive to 160GB will cost you no more than £5!

I'd change the CPU on the core 2 setup to a Q9550, the 9650 isn't worth the £170 premium. Just overclock the Q9550, it isn't far behind the speed of the 9650. Also for that setup, change the ram to 8500 DDR2, the DDR3 again doesn't warrant the huge price tag.

The following is a good motherboard, cheaper than the deluxe.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Again increase the size of the hard drive, for little money you can get a decent size, even if it is for the operating system, the larger drives will be faster.

This will make the core 2 setup much cheaper than the i7. It depends on what you want to do with the computer, core 2 will be better for one thing, and i7 another. But it is your choice over which you go for.

I wanted it for Multimedia, Games and 3D Graphic Development. I use Photoshop a LOT along with Word, Media Jukebox, Firefox, Thunderbird , sometimes All at once... with Antivirus etc ....

I don't wanna hear the Music skip ONCE or lose FPS in the Graphic department....

Thanks .....:)

its not actually that bad you know, spent bit more time with it and set up the pc and its quiet and seems to be on solid enough. will have to keep an eye on temps but may end up keeping it

Keep us updated, was about to buy it aswell, looking around for alternatives atm and there dont seem to be any. What's the stock cooler like with the 920??

With regards to the build, if you're anything like me and you're looking for a "futureproof" system that can handle power hungry applications (for me its multi track music production) with multiple programs running at the same time, that is stable and easy to overclock, then the i7 rig may be the one for you.

Keep in mind however, I am not a gamer! The performance increase seen with an i7 rig in games is not worth it as far as I can see. I've also got a good £1300 to burn and I'm not in the position to wait until after xmas (when the prices will most likely drop) or for the new AMD platform which will be released next year(?)

Anyway I hope this helps, I still recommend you go for a bigger HD too :p

How About Speed over size??/?? Are the Raptors Any good...or is it all hype .....

Cause the only one I could afford would once again be the =~ 80 GIG version

(WD740ADFD) (RAPTOR) (74GB) (16MB) (10,000 RPM) (SERIAL ATA)

But then again it only has to house Windows. I have a 1 TB MyBook External Hard Drive .....

I would deffinately recommend the raptors. I think HD speed is one of the specs people miss out all the time. I've used the raptors before as bootable drives with windows on (like you want to do) and everything loads and works so much quicker. They can get hot though, but if you're only having one HD in the build it'll be more than fine.

Of course if you want real speed, then check out 15k SAS drives :) One of the reasons I'm building an i7 rig, the Asus P6t mobo supports them, happy days!

Has anybody got a scsi drive on the new P6T. Was looking at a raptor for mine but not sure now.

Sorry to hijack thread but any links to scsi performance.

Yep, bought chip, asus p6t and waterblock.

Have also bought gskil 1333 memory but not sure if thats going to let me overclock much?

Also not sure what hard drive as my old rig still uses a 32gig raptor. Was looking at new 150gig raptor?

Upgarding my 4870 to 4870x2 as well

I can also get GSkill up here, it's a 100.00 hundred dollars cheaper, but was unsure of the quality... I assume you still get the 2 choices of speed in the BIOS like with the Corsair......

btw think 600 Watts Power is enough or am I going to experience failure here.
All I plan to run is
1 hard drive,
1 optical drive,
1 Palit 4850
and the Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 1336 ......

Thanks man.....
