Hi this is my first post on overclockers so be gentle :)

I currently have a 920 C0/C1 stepping and I'm venturing into overclocking. I'm looking to achieve a decent overclock for 24/7 something around 3.8 Ghz (maybe 4 :) ) on air.

I just want some opinions if it's worth upgrading to a 920 D0 stepping or 930/950, would like to keep the vcore at a minimum, possibly something in the range of 1.25 - 1.28.

I have tried to overclock my 920 but the vcore was a bit high at 1.35 although the temps were fine even when gaming, didn't try any stress programs yet.

Is it worth upgrading or its safe to leave the 920 at 1.35v 24/7?

I certainly wouldn't upgrade that CPU to a D0 version. You may be able to get a slightly higher overclock 200-400MHz - but in the scheme of things this is only ~5% more.

The C0/C1 i7 chips are not the same as D0 stepping chips in terms of overclocking - 1.25-1.28 may be enough for a D0 to get it to 3.8-4GHz, but this isn't the case with the C0 - you need to put in more, this is normal. Also, they tend to top out at ~3.8GHz, so I wouldn't bank on 4GHz, however the real-world performance difference is tiny.

hi there i have the co/c1 stepping, and have ran mine stable for over a year now at 4009.2mhz the voltage does have to be a lot higher than on the do/d1 but if you want some settings feel free to message me.

Hi nmsraider

What's your setup? Could you share your settings please :)

I'm running on Asus P6T Deluxe v2 with 6x1GB Corsair Dominator @ 1600 Mhz and for cooling the CPU I have a Thermalright HR-02 together with a 140m silent fan.

Thanks!

and a load of fans
If you are unsure of these settings i would start lower and build up as not all cpu's will run the same. here is a good guide to overclocking your chip but bare in mind this is for the d0 so you will need more cpu v to run stable. any further questions feel free to ask.
this is what i run at 24x 7 but it also runs @ 4200.8Mhz with same setting just by changing the BCLK fre. to 200 but on my system runs slightly warmer than i would like.
