Thermalright TRUE with sensibly chosen fans, or water :)

If the former, it reacts well to lapping

Looked through your linked thread. If you want a good cooler, you're going to have to take the board out. Push pins are just not a good idea.

Same sort of thing as sanding, grinding etc. It's normally done with a horizontal rotating disk with water continually poured into the middle. A finishing technique.

In this case, it means using wet and dry paper on the base of the heatsink. Better contact, and therefore better temperatures, are achieved by having the base of the sink (and ideally the top of the processor) completely flat. So you tape wet and dry paper to sheet glass (flat) and rub gently back and forth until the base is all shiney. "Processor lapping" will find you many pictures, and a lapped TRUE is a really exceptional cooler. helps that the nickel coating is removed, so you have copper in direct contact with the processor. Voids warranty on processors, probably on heatsinks too. Can't think why anyone would rma a heatsink though.

Or, if you're a lucky git like me, you put the TRUE on a lapping table and get strange looks from the other scientists.

you can, just the cpu will be 5 degrees hotter, takes a couple of hours to do, you could try and get the thermalright ultra 120 black, it has a slightly better base

TRUE is prob best air cooler for i7, followed by the Noctua and also worth considering the Titan Fenrir although at load the stock fans on these can get pretty loud.

The Noctua comes with 2 of their P12 fans which are excellent for heatsinks due to their high static pressure and they are also very quiet (that's why they cost so much too..) - best all round would be a TRUE with either Noctua P12 fans or some Xigmatek fans as they are pretty decent too.

lapping sounds scary but trust me unless you are really malc-o its hard to mess up. I bit the bullet and did my E6300 and Scythe ninja (thread around these forums) and makes you feel real smug inside like ur driving a prius PC
Oh and it dropped 10 degrees off my temps:D Better than a slap in the face
