Looking for an upgrade for BF4 release. I use a single GPU, at 1920x1080, for BF3 only and some surfing!

I do not have the time to overclock  The upgrade is necessary as my wife's machine is getting tired (she will get the i7 920).

I need to look at a socket change, and I quite like the comfort of an upgrade path and hence simply, popping in a new CPU rather than fresh install from scratch - this would lead ivybridge-E. Looking at reviews however it seems Haswell is the sensible option.. If I go 4770k is there nowhere else to go after?

I've been out the loop recently - can you spec some memory too? I am ok with cheap memory given I don't overclock only.

If you can afford it the 4770k is a hell of a CPU. If you wanted something cheaper then look at the AMD FX 8 core CPUs. The 8350 would be better for you if you don't want to overclock.

But yeah, 4770k is the expensive high end CPU to have right now :)

No budget, unless the price is not worth paying. I was thinking 4770k. Where we at with memory with this chp?

If your soul purpose of the machine is gaming, then get some bog standard ram, it really doesn't hurt gaming performance at all however is inefficient for that CPU for most other things :)

If you don't mind dropping a bit more then something like this would go nicely:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Avexir MPower Yellow Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U24001004G-2CM) £89.99
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (TXD38G2400HC10QDC01) £71.99
Total : £170.68 (includes shipping : £7.25).

If you're not overclocking then save some money and dont get the K version...Though overclocking is pretty easy and 4.2-4.4 should be simple (with decent enough cooling)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4771 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £239.99
Total : £249.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

You want fast memory with Haswell CPUs.

Just to quote from bit-tech :
With i5 4670K at 4.40GHz
Crysis 3
DDR3 1600MHz: min 42fps, average 51fps
DDR3 2400MHz: min 45fps, average 52fps

Skyrim
DDR3 1600MHz: min 79fps, average 112fps
DDR3 2400MHz: min 84fps, average 112fps

Overclocking isn't really time consuming.
My friend with his 4770K and Asus Maximus VI Hero, we literally went into BIOS and select CPU Level Up - 4.4GHZ.

And he's been stable ever since.

EDIT : Hmm, looks like I'm going to need to get some faster RAM for those minimum's soon then!

YAY MOAR PERFORMANCE.

I would not bother with an upgrade path in mind, as anything decent will last you a while and by the time it does suffer there will be better alternatives available for the money (the higher end parts retain their value relativly well) than a single gen jump (a la sandy>ivy) with marginal core preformance increase, hyperthreading(i5>i7) or in the case of E series an expensive 4c>6c swap.

I stand corrected, helps with minimums :D
Important when gaming, as it's the minimums you notice.

Make sure you go with the K. You may not want to overclock straight away, but as I found out there's nothing worse than paying top dollar for a locked Intel CPU and seeing it retired because you can't give it a shove.

For next gen gaming you'll want 8 threads because the games coming out are all shouting for them. It's pretty much down to the next gen consoles and the engines they will be using being very similar to the PC (X86 architecture).

As usual guys, great advice - as I suspected it looks like 4770k and some 2400mhz ram.

The final trade off is whether i get a mobo with pci slots for my creative extrememusic, or move with the times, and get a standard mobo with pci-e slots - and hence, purchase a new soundcard.. which seems a shame as nothing wrong with present soundcard.

I don't want to upset people, but my wife will literally be using the 920 for MS Word and minimal web browsing.. it pains me but there is more value keeping the chip than selling.

Do you know which memory was being used?

I'm looking to get the following:

G.SKILL TridentX DDR3-2133MHz/PC3-17000 16GB (8GBx2) CL9-11-11-31

I don't think it matters too much what memory you get, so long as you are getting decent brand ones. The reason for the higher frame rate is directly because of Haswell's improvement on the memory controller, which is why it actually benefit gaming performance, unlike on SandyBridge anything higher than 1600MHz don't really make any difference.
