i7 920 or Q6600

It's not really worth the money for the i7 at the moment with what you currently have. For more performance overclocking that e6600 would be good or getting a q6600.

i7 would be ok value if building a full new build but when upgrading it isn't worth it.

Is there really much point in forking out so much for a processor?

Will be used mostly for gaming but what advantage does it have over the Q6600?

Well the i7 is good, but expensive, you already have a good PC, so why bother.

If your happy with your current spec and if it does what you want then don't upgrade for the sake of it.

Just get a faster dual or quad for the moment if you really need to upgrade.

Benchmarks.

He's interested in games.

From what I've researched i7 is a lot faster (eg. here - i7 is 35% faster clock for clock).

BUT

....because people generally run 1920*1200 or higher and with lots of FSAA etc. their games are still mainly GPU limited, meaning that unless you have Crossfire/SLI or run in low resolutions then you're unlikely to see a difference between Q6600 and i7 outside of benchmarks (for gaming that is).

Indeed, the gains are massive at 1280x1024 and below, maybe even 1600x___

If you game at high resolution, go for a cheaper Q6600 and put the rest to a modern GFX card like the 4870 1gb
