i7 920 Overclock - High Temps?

Hello,

I've had this processor for a few years now, back when I first got it I did a minor overclock from 2.67 to 3.00ghz nothing exciting and life was grand idle temps were around 25c and under load around 60c. I stopped using it for gaming however for a long time and just set everything back to default settings, recently with the release of Diablo III and me getting back into PC gaming in general I wanted to do another overclock. I overclocked it to 3.20ghz, and it seems stable I mean I have more tests to do but it'll take 20 runs on LinX without issue and I ran it on Prime95 for just over 2 hours without a crash.

My concern is with my I7's temps, idle temps are now around 38c and under load it gets as high as 75c. I'm sure I need more thermal paste as I haven't applied any in a while but outside of that can anybody think what might be the problem here? The voltages for my overclock are below, if any additional info is needed please let me know.

Voltages:

CPU Vcore - 1.18125v
QPI/Vtt - 1.215v
DRAM Voltage - 1.600V

Hardware:

CPU - i7 920 D0
Motherboard - Gigabyte UD5 (X58)

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks fellas.

75c wont affect an i920, you dont say if you're using a quality cooler or the stock one. Im running a reduced overclock of 3.66ghz using a noctua12; i can hit 4ghz but its not worth the extra fan noise, i like to run them all on min settings.

When I had an i7 920, I was running at 4GHz - 100% load I would hit maximum 75ish [Noctua NH U12P]

Althought I was running Vcore 1.26v And 1.3v RAM and QPI 1.3v - which is very different to your setup :p

I have my 920 overclocked to 3.40ghz and temps are (H100):
Idle:40C
Load:70C

They are high but I'm not concerned.

I've purchased a i7 950 off auction site to compare my temps which will be here next week - I got it quite cheap too .

For 3 years I had my 920 With max load of 90-92c in IBT and absolute max of 80c in BF3. Those chips can take a beating.

Ah fellas I'm sorry, I'm using an aftermarket cooler. It's an Akasa AK-967, happy to hear these temps are more normal than I thought. Might buy a new cooler anyway and some new paste just to keep myself right though. I just think those temps are a bit high for the voltages I'm running. The case I'm using is an Antec 902, all my cables are nice and tidy plenty of airflow in there so it's just a bit puzzling as to why it's so hot.

+1 for a new cooler, what budget have you got in mind? And is your cpu a DO or CO stepping model.

Mines been running either at 3.8Ghz or 4Ghz for the last 3 years.
Idles at 40c and maxes out at 70c but I have all my rad fans spinning on medium as I hate noise.

Never clocked mine until about three months after i got it, (june 2009), since then it's been at 4ghz apart from a few months where ive had it at 4.2ghz. Cooled by an Alpenfohn k2 dual tower cooler, incredibly quiet stock fans on it. Hits 80c under load in my new case, (shinobi xl) was 7c cooler in my old Lian Li A70F. In games though it only hits the mid 60's but even still the cpu fans are inaudible.

anything below 80c is fine imo,i was using a thermolab baram heatsink and two scythe ultra kaze fans hooked up to a fan controller,i never went above 80c @4.2ghz but that was with a decent chip

you can set cpu voltage to normal or use dvid, you might be able to knock some of that stock voltage for 3.2ghz,

i had my i7 920 running on air with a 4G'z overclock and my temps on idle were approx 24c-30c depending on how hot my room was, cant remember what they were under stress but the idle temps give you and idea of just how cool they can and should be even on air mate. (room tempreature would always have been about 25c too give or take a few degrees)

I'm sorry but that is imposable.
Room temp of 25c and CPU temp between 24c & 30c using air cooling...
What to you gain from claiming that?

I thought about it too, but either aida64 etc must have been reporting it wrong or I was blind, but I can assure you, according to what was reported is what I said, maybe theres a cold draught in the house or something (my pc sits on the floor), I dunno, or maybe my desktop thermometer is totally bonkers (which it might be, but thats why I said give or take a few degrees), and I have nothing to gain mate just saying things to make up storys, thats not my game, never has or never will be.

Hope that helps.;)

p.s
ohh sorry, my overclock was 4G'z with turbo on, I.E- the real clock was slightly less and turbo kicked it up to 4 when needed, maybe thats something I should have made clearer.

Maybe there was a glitch.
It would never idle at 24c - 30c in a 25c room with air cooling

My room is approx 23c and as soon as windows loads the CPU temp is 28c and that's under water. At that point it is too early for the benefits of air/water to have taken effect (12 secs after hitting power button)

I dunno mate, I really do appreciate your comments etc but I can only tell what aida64 was reporting and what my tabletop thermometer was saying the room temp was, maybe my room thermometer is miles out, I dunno, what type of room thermometer do you recommend and I will buy a new one ?

This one is just one of those digital ones that cost like £10 or summit like that (cant remember as its been ages), you would normally use them in your fridge/freezer, that kinda thing.

One thing I can say though is that with my old setup (the i7 920 one), is right from the start when I started with it when I got it about 3.5years ago and then got into overclocking a bit (I am a million miles from being good at clocking, lol), I must say that it did always seem to run very very cool, well apart from when it was under massive stress on benchmarks etc, but even so, its was still cool compared to a lot of peoples I have seen on here, maybe I was just lucky and had a really good chip from a good batch, I dunno.

But, if you have any ideas about a decent room thermometer then let me know please as now youve got me thinking my little one I have here is garbage, lol, cheers mate :)
