First attempt at overclocking this new system.

Nearly everything on auto, except 1.64v for ram.

HT is on and raised the bclk to 200 for 4ghz.

Ran prime 95 for an hour without any errors and noticed the highest temp was 83 degrees on 1 core, which seems high to me.

I have a H50 set up on push/pull intake into the back of the case, and 3 x 120mm Apaches on exhaust out of the top.

I have tried lowering the vcore slightly but then have problems booting into W7 64bit.

Any advice on what to do next?
 
did you increment in 5 or 10 etc.. or did you use a template?

you need to run prime for about 6 hours minimum to see if its stable
 
83 isn't great with that set up, I'm assuming you've put apaches on the H50. Suggest remounting using less thermal paste.
 
You should manually set Vcore and Vtt in the BIOS, if these are left on auto the mobo tends to overvolt like crazy, which will cause high temps..
 
yes manually find the correct voltages because as said the motherboard left to it's own devices will use a lot more voltage then is needed and is probably what is causing your high temps. What is the room temp?
 
To the lowest voltage required for stability.

83 degrees in low ambients is a bad sign. When you mean plenty of ventilation, you mean a clear, unrestricted air path and not holes everywhere in the case, right?
 
For 4GHz a huge amount i7 D0 can do it under 1.3 Vcore set in bios. I would start there in your case test it for at least an hour in OCCT then work the vcore down untill you find the sweet spot and test for how ever many hours/days/weeks your epeen needs ;)
This is not really the correctway to o/c but serves it purpose :)

My min for 4ghz is 1.285 in the bios and that a poor chip some of the guys are doing it on lower really is down to how good your chip is mate.
 
I'll give it a whirl when I get some free time.

Do I leave all the other settings alone on auto whilst I do this, or is there anything I need to change to get to 4ghz?
 
When overclocking you should disable EIST (Enhanced intel speedstep technology), turbo mode, C1 and any other power saving options that may interfere with an overclock as well as any spread spectrum settings. These can be enabled once you have successfully passed Prime95 or similar prog for x hours.

Now, if you want to run a simple and much used template:

Set your ioh and ich to 1.2,
your vdimm to 1.65,
your cpu pll to 1.88,
and your qpi/uncore to 1.35.
For D0 users set your vcore to 1.275 and for c0/c1 users set your vcore to 1.4
Bclk to 190/191 or 210/211 and multiplier to 21 and 19 respectively.
Check for prime stability. D0s should be fine, but c0/c1 still may not make it, at this point your temps may be too high if you're not on water so I suggest you start working backward in order to hit a much lower vcore.

You're recommending disabling turbo then setting the multiplier to 21. Otherwise that's probably reasonable. It needs to include setting qpi to x36 and uncore to twice memory or twice memory+1 though.

The approach of set every voltage to sane limits and hope it's stable isn't great, for one thing too much on a given line can lead to instability just as easily as too little. IOH/ICH may well need no adjustment at all, and pll may be more stable around 1.3 than around 1.8, let alone increasing it further.
