Hi, I'm kind of having some troubles with overclocking my i7 920 and was wondering if any of you people out there know what could be my problem.

Here is my computer, (nothing OC'd)

Intel i7 920 2.6Ghz
Akasa Venom Nano CPU cooler (Recently purchased from Overclockers)
X58-UD3R Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 Ram 8GB
NVidia GTS 450 graphics card

I haven't overclocked my CPU or any part of my computer in that fact. It's all standard settings.

Well, here's my problem:

I went to run Prime95 to do a test to see whether my computer was capable of running the test for a long period of time, for curiosity prior to an overclock. When I ran the test, my CPU reached temperatures of 100 degrees C.... Which is ridiculous as to what other people are getting on theirs. I have enough case cooling and there is enough thermal paste on the CPU, but not overloaded.

I was just wondering if there was a reason for this being so high, and what I need to do to get it to stop getting so hot.

If any screenshots would make it easier for you to help me, please, do not hesitate to ask!

Many thanks prior to you assisting me :P I'm happy with the rest of the side to computing, and how to overclock, but not sure why this is so high :o

Cheers :)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I would start by checking the fan on the cooler is connected and working properly and then make sure the cooler is installed correctly.

Make sure the push pin fittings are fully pushed down until they click. You're best doing this with the motherboard out of the case or while supporting the motherboard from behind if you have a case with access to the rear of the CPU socket.

I assume you used only a small amount of thermal paste?

Thanks for your reply :)

I have made sure that the fan is in place properly. When I installed it the first time, I took the motherboard out and made sure that it was in properly before powering the system.

Also, with the thermal paste, I used only enough to cover the top of the CPU when using a credit card to spread it. I know that having not enough on the CPU will make it overheat and too much will do that too.

Taking a look inside, there's nothing that seems wrong. I can play BF3 while using skype, playing Crysis 2 at the same time and having tonnes of web pages open, really stressing stuff aswell, but not using the stress tests, and my processor doesn't go above 55 degrees C....

Anyone know why this could be? :(
