Lo Ppl,

Just looking for a quick bit of advice/reassurance. I’m having to replace my cpu due to issues chronicled elsewhere in GH.

Anyway, it was an i7 920 (Bloomfield) and I’m looking to replace with this i7 950 3.06Ghz with the following details at a bargain price:

Boxed i7 950 3.06Ghz
SKU 935320
Mfr Part #: 865204
UPC: 735858208451

Is that sku/mfr part no ok?

Would anyone care to talk me out of it?

Thanks in advance… :)

Yup that's a good CPU. It will work with your current system as it is basically the same cpu as your 920, but with a higher stock multiplier. Just make sure you buy it from a good seller (if you are in the US then I hear buying fresh eggs is a good thing), just in case you have any issues and can RMA it.

As for the other info, I think that it's just reseller information. So long as you are being sold an "i7 950" then you are sorted, there is only one stepping (D0).

Are you able to RMA your faulty 920?

Ok thanks ppl.

From micro-centre who are pretty reputable as far as I can tell - nationwide stores but just do good deals every now and again - $199 for this.

Don't think I can RMA the other one as bought it from shop in London over a year ago and don't have the receipt though I suppose could dig out a ccard statement. But looks like problems occured when I shipped my pc over so not sure if they'd go for that.

Thanks again for the help though. :)

your whole computer would have been covered by your home insurance during the move, unless it ran out before you moved. Although you shipped it, so Im not sure then.

Get the serial number from your CPU, send it to intel to RMA it, should be global or if you explain you moved, the worst you would have to do is post it to england. Other option if you can find out where you bought it from is if the online account has a record of you buying it, then just post it over to them.

Ok, sounds good. I bought it direct from a shop, not online.

Thanks for the info though, I'll give it a go!

Not worth the extra, you can easily overclock to 3.8-4.0Ghz on these chips

+1

Definitely not worth any extra money.

They are all the same chips. Its the same bloomfied core, the stepping is the same - the only difference is the 960 has a slightly higher maximum multiplier. Since the 950's maximum multiplier (23) when coupled with a 200MHz BCLK motherboard is more than enough (this would yield 4.6GHz if you chip could do it and you could cool it) - then a higher multiplier just isn't needed.
