I7 920 temperature and oc help

Hi, I have just overclocked my i7 920 to 4ghz as it was bottlenecking my sli 670's at 1440p.

I have coretemp running whilst stress testing in prime95 and the individual core temperatures are about 15-20c higher than the cpu temperature on my LCD poster. Which temperature should I go off?

Oh and the overclock is definitely helping the bottleneck, both gpu's are in the 90% range now in Crysis 3.

I have set the cpu voltage to 1.3 and getting temperatures of 65c on my lcd poster and 75 to 80c in coretemp (with prime95 running). Should I leave it at 4ghz or try higher?

Thank you

always go off your core temps using coretemp or realtemp program

what motherboard/memory/cooler are you using?

I had that cooler, its not great but not terrible either, temps are fine for 4ghz 4.2ghz might get too toasty

to learn how to clock through cpu/offset you first need to set cpu v back to auto in the bios and stock clocks and see how much its defaulting to in the bios

then using a calculator subtract the default amount from your stable voltage of 1.3v and enter that into offset with a plus sign to add and usually the first two digits as 0 so +0.0

enable all power saving c states and eist except c1e as this usually causes motherboard squeal and set to balanced power saving profile in windows power saving then test for stability and add a touch more/less in offset if needed

Check Post #2 out, use it as a rough guide, for 4.2ghz try CPU - 1.35v

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18520041

If it runs stable see if you can lower the CPU Volts.
Ok have set it to 4.2ghz and 1.35v and seems pretty stable.

I tried to lower the voltage to 1.325 and I had bsod straight away.

The temperatures have gone up to 84c pretty quick with prime95 running. They don't seem to be getting hotter though.

I mean in everyday use, like gamin and browsing I am never going to get anywhere like these temperatures am I?

I ran Heaven benchmark and 4.2 has almost completely relieved the bottleneck so would be quite keen to keep it there lol

Thanks

edit: Have been running prime95 for 20mins and max temp is 86c. Is this too hot?

Hi, try it out gaming keep a eye on temps, it might pay you to get a better cooler if your keeping it at 4.2 at 1.35v. Again use my guide try to get as many Bios settings off auto as auto tends to give higher volts needed.

What's your case air flow like ?

My case is very good, it is a Cooler Master HAF 932 Full Tower Case.

What cpu cooler would you recommend? I would ideally like one that would also work on newer generation i7's as I plan to upgrade in a year or so.

Thanks
