hi

this is my first desktop and my first overclock ever.

i have
i7 920 D0
nh-u12p [1 fan, the other is availible]
artic silver ceramique

im at
3.6GHz
with
1.232V core
1451MHz RAM speed
21x170 multiplier/bus

with temps
<75C under full load

the problem is i can get it to 3.8, but the temperatures are too high with the voltage i need
im new so i havent altered QPI or anything as i dont understand it enough

so i fear the issue is with the cooling, is a new heatsink etc worth it or do i need new paste etc

what advicce would you give :)

75 isn't great, but it isn't too bad. Attach the other fan and see what difference it makes. It depends how comfortable you are with the temperatures at a given clock, and a compromise between the two :)

ive read that sub 80 is best and safe enough so would like this as the max full load

idle is 40C approx. my room is about 23C

Also try dropping the vcore, as an example, my i7 can do 3.6ghz om 1.18 vcore, yours might not be the same, but its always worth trying.

people missing the obvious here.. You say you haven't altered VTT, is that on lowest or on auto? If auto probably gone really high and won't help temps at all, get that on manual and work it up to lowest stable

Also get the other fan going, doube check mount etc etc

Agree paulyD, asus boards do have a habit of overvolting if left on auto, qpi i use meself is 1.312500. Seems to be steady enough at either 21 x 193 and 20 x 200, 1.2750 vcore on my particular cpu.

yes the QPI is on auto as is VVT, this is because i dont fully understand what i would be doing here and what values to use.

what settings are are best to start at here?

thanks :)
