Hi Chaps,

I've got a i7 920 @ 3.5Ghz coupled with a 7970 Graphics card which seems to handle most modern games fine.

I'm considering going haswell, but curious as to whether I would be better off waiting for whatever is after haswell (later on in the year?)

Thanks guys,

If you have a good cooler your 920 should be able to do 4.0ghz, yes the new hardware will be quicker but not enough to justify the cost of a new mobo, cpu and possibly a new psu. 920's and 930's still can hold their own I won't be changing to Haswell.

You have to ask yourself is there anything that your current pc cannot do or play. Why not just pick up another 930 or 920 DO stepping second hand and over clock. A 920/930 @ 4.2ghz is on par with a stock i7 3770k. A i7 4770k @ 4.6ghz is equivalent to i7 3770k @ 4.8ghz and slightly quicker. I personally am not that impressed by Haswell the performance gains for gaming are not enough. A second gpu would give better gains unless your gaming at 1080p in which case 7970 is fine at it is. Depends on how big your upgrade itch is. There are other threads already discussing this issue if you can get a 920 to 4.0ghz - 4.2ghz most say the gains/costs are not worth it.

I am in a very. Similar boat to you.

I7 950 clocked at 3.9 gig (can't squeeze any more out of it sadly)
X2 gtx 670 sli 2gb
6 gig ram
Gaming at 5760:1080

I was hoping haswell would be a nice improvement but seems disappointing on reviews so far. The energy savings are good though.

Would you think upgrading would see some gains at all gaming at 5760/1080

I reckon my CPU is bottlenecking a little in BF3 (multiplayer) and a few other titles like crysis 3, but my system can handle pretty much every other game as long as I don't bust the 2gb VRAM limit.

Any advice would be really appreciated

i7 980x ?:p

@the op,surely you can overclock that little 920?

I have a 930 @ 4.15. Haswell is calling, I will be mainly focusing on BF3/BF4 multiplayer where my 930 lets down my 680SLI setup and 64 player madness.

Any advice on the boards etc?

Well after seeing the Haswell review just going to upgrade my GPU to 780 my 920/4.2ghz will last another 1 or 2 years if l upgrade l'll go x79 route.

I've also got an i7-930. It's sat at 3.8Ghz... It can just about manage 4Ghz, but it's not 100% stable in warm weather.

I've decided to go for a 4770k to replace it. I just bought a pair of GTX780s and I'd like to have a faster CPU underneath them. Frankly, if it were just the CPU speed I might not bother, but I'd like access to SATA 3.0, and PCI-e 3.0 as well. I would have liked to see a little better overclocking from Haswell though - 5Ghz would have made the decision a lot easier.

What about an i7 860 at 3.8GHz with an oc'd 7970? Will I see a big jump in gaming performance in games like arma III?

I also need to think about sata 3 asy p55 chip mobo only has sata 2. Is 3 worth it over sata 2?

I'm going to wait and see what ivy-e brings before i decide ditch my 920. Sadly mine only does 3.6Ghz which is absolutely rubbish for a d0 stepping. I've had it at 3.8 before but it wasn't 100% stable.
