hey guys,

so i've been running the rig in my signature for some time now, and it has served me very well. however i have been thinking of treating myself to a little upgrade. unfortunately for me i'm quite out of the loop when it comes to cpus currently out.

i'm currently wondering is it worth upgrading from my current setup, i don't do much editing or anything like that, but i would like to stick with an i7 setup. i primarily use my pc for gaming web browsing and the usual media stuff.

i have an idea as to which components i would like to buy (although i am open to suggestions and recommendations) i'm just wondering if it's worth doing or should i just wait for the next batch of processors.

(apologies for the punctuation, speech to text isn't as good as it should be right now lol)

if I was you I would not bother, the system is fine for gaming.

I am running a I7 950 @ 4ghz and had a 970 before sending it back and that was fine for everything I wanted to do with gaming.

do you have a SSD or are you currently using a HDD? if you don't have a SSD I would suggest getting one of them for a upgrade and then save the rest

Won't your motherboard be SATA 2 then? Aka limited to 250-300MB/s or there abouts.
You'd make full use of the EVO with SATA 3.

If you were to upgrade, what budget would you have? You'd get about £120 selling the i7/mobo/ram.

I have a X58 board and controlled by a Marvel controller for the sata 3 ports which is terrible!

on my SSD I can reach 410mb read and 250mb write. I have looked at all options to try and get a socket 1136 board that has a decent controller and think there was only 1 that had intel sata 3 ports

both my SSDs are using the sata 2 ports which give me read and write speeds of 270mb

yeah unfortunately im still running SATA 2, my board doesn't even have usb 3 lol.

in terms of budget for a new motherboard ram and cpu combo i'd probably be willing to spend around £500-£600.

But like i said only if it's worth upgrading. I've got the upgrade itch, but if the upgrade isn't worth it i'm pretty sure i can hold off, i just definitely wanted to get some advice from you fine Folks.

for the amount you would need to spend I don't think you would see much of a improvement in gaming.

what games do you play and what ress?

I have no plans to upgrade my system and to be honest there is new CPUs coming from intel so I would wait if you really want to upgrade. when I had my 970 I was playing FarCry 4 fine

I am currently using a HD 5830 till I decide on a new GPU to use and game @ 1080P

just the usual stuff, bf4 etc. currently i'm still gaming at 1080p, i'm not looking to move up in monitor size just yet, but 1440p will be what I do move to in time.

then I would stick with what you have for the time being, save the money and put it towards a upgrade later down the line when you will see a improvement in games

I defy anyone in real world use to tell if a SSD is on a sata2 or a sata3 port.

1366 platform is still very much able to handle modern games so don't worry.

My SSD is SATA 3 Gb/s anyway. :D

In fact my desktop loads Windows faster than any of my other machines despite having the oldest SSD. :o

thanks for the advice guys i think i'll hold off for now. Are the new skylake cpu is going to be worth looking into as a gamer?

Yeh I'd recommend waiting for Skylake for sure. Haswell has been out since June 2013, not worth investing into at this stage unless you urgently need the upgrade.

No concrete information on Skylake yet, though it's confirmed to have ddr4 and rumoured to be a game changer, performance wise.

Fun times ahead!

Surprised no-one's pointed you to this thread yet:

A very cheap upgrade for 6 cores, and cooler running processor. Might be worth looking at the 5670 if you want to run above 4Ghz. Should keep you ticking over for a while.

Quoted again just because it can be a 6 core upgrade for about £60, runs cooler and faster with two extra cores. Certainly worth considering, even if you are looking at a full upgrade latter on.

Wouldn't bother man, the X58 platform is still a great performer for games. Give it a year or 2 then you should have some interesting options (New AMD 'Zen' platform and the Intel response is coming next year).

I was tempted to switch to X99 but it's not much of a bump considering what I've already got.
