Have a Thermaltake VA9003SWA Kandalf Aluminium Full Tower case with a huge fan in the side of the case and numerous other fans in it.

With my old system
Gigabyte GA_P35_DS4
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 LGA775 Conroe 2.40Ghz

I was getting an extremely low idle CPU temp with the CPU overclocked to 3Ghz, just 24 degrees. This is with the stock cooler.

I've just move the above to my sons case and upgraded mine to
Gigabyte GA-EX58-DS4
i7-920 2.6Ghz
Stock cooler.

No overclocking at all I'm getting a whopping 51 degrees (Idle) reported in Everest.

I thought that I may have fitted the cooler wrong, so today I removed it, cleaned the thermal paste off with Iso-Propyl Alcohol and applied Arctic MX thermal paste and refitted the cooler. Still getting 51 degrees idle.

On further tests:

Everest is showing:
Motherboard: 33
CPU: 51
Core 1: 45
Core 2: 45
Core 3: 42
Core 4: 42

Core Temp is showing:
Core 1: 45
Core 2: 42
Core 3: 45
Core 4: 42

HWMonitor is showing:
TMPIN0: 44
TMPIN1: 33
TMPIN2: 51

Core 0: 47
Core 1: 43
Core 2: 46
Core 3: 43

Rebooting into the BIOS and it tells me:
Current System Temp: 43
CPU Temp: 33 (which seems to be what Everest is reporting for motherboard temp)
MCH TEMP 47

This is with the CPU fan on full
CPU Enhanced Halt: Disabled
c3/C6/C7 State Support: Disabled
CPU Thermal Monitor: Disabled
CPU EIST Function Disabled
Virtualization Technology Disabled

I'm presuming from what I've read that the above 6 BIOS settings need to be disabled to keep the FAN going at full speed?

Tried in Turbo and Standard, exactly the same temp.

Any suggestions or advice please?

Many thanks

I'm running 72 degrees using stress test on Everest @ 3.8Ghz on my i7 920
I ran it for 24 hours, no crashes. Perfectly stable and been hammering loads of games

Absolutely incredible chip, feels twice as fast as my Q6600

damn nice rig, what 3dmark score you get? 06 or vantage or both :)

Thanks all

I tried enabling CPU Smart fan (varies fan according to cpu TEMP) and with the CPU idling at 51, the fan is now running at less than half speed at 908 RPM.

So I think your replies and the fact that the CPU fan doesn't seem in any need to run very fast, I can put my worries to rest.
