Hi. I just set up my new rig.

i7920 + P6T Deluxe V2.

I wanted to overclock my 920 to about 3.7-3.8ghz i don't really need it much higher at the moment. My friend gave me his OC settings since he has the same setup really. (Never OC'd anything in my life, see? :P)

Though when i run Prime95 with small FFT it runs my temps up to 80c and that's only 3.7 that doesn't seem right to me. Right?

It is as follows:

AI Tweaker Menu
----------------------
Ai Overclock Tuner => Manual
Intel Speed Step Tech => Disabled
Intel Turbo Tech => Disabled
CPU Ratio => Auto
BCLK Freq => 186
PCIE Freq => 100
DRAM Freq => DDR3-1491MHz
UCLK Freq => Auto
QPI Link Data Rate => Auto

Voltages
-----------
CPU Voltage => 1.35
CPU PLL Voltage => 1.96
QPI/DRAM Core Voltage => 1.35
DRAM Bus Voltage => 1.64
CPU Differential Amplitude => 800mV
... all other voltages to Auto

Any help as to what i can do to bring the temps down a little would be great. I don't want to be blowing things up now would i? xD

I don't have an I7 set up but from reading around on here your CPU Voltage looks quite high, you could try lowering that a couple of notches and test to see if still stable.

Even with a poor chip like mine you shoud be able to do 3.8 on about 1.2850 in the bios 4.0ghz seems to be the massive jump in vcore. your CPU PLL volatge is way to high...who ever gave ou those voltages?

If you have no luck try

Ai Overclock Tuner => Manual
Intel Speed Step Tech => ON
Intel Turbo Tech => ON
CPU Ratio => Auto
BCLK Freq => 181
CPU Voltage => 1.28
CPU PLL Voltage => 1.8
QPI/DRAM Core Voltage => 1.3
DRAM Bus Voltage => 1.64

I tried those settings it idles at around 38~ and primes95's at 70~. I'm going to assume it could be the Thermal Paste afterall i did just use the one that came with the Heatsink (Dark Knight). Any recommendations for that?

Also the tempetures seem to quite different between each core, perhaps the thermal isn't spread clearly? Although i did spread it with a credit card it looked alright to me! lol. The temps of the cores at Prime95 are around this:

70 68 66 65.

That's an easy 5c from the first core and the last. Think it's a fitting problem aswell as thermal? If any at all..

That CPU Voltage is higher than it needs to be, you could probably drop it down to 1.28 / 1.3 quite comfortably.

I like OCZ Freeze for thermal paste, though that's a personal preference. A small-pea /grain of rice sized amount in the middle and spread it with your finger. The pressure and heat of the cooler with spread it out more. :)

Overclocking does not work like this. You can't take carefully chosen settings from one system and apply them to another one just because it has nominally the same components. Every processor, every motherboard is different as a result of the manufacturing process.

That your friend gave you a set of bios settings to use only serves to demonstrate that he doesn't understand this. As such his competence is called into question. I suggest you overclock slowly, from stock settings and with as much understanding as possible, or not at all.

Otherwise all you're doing is getting us to tweak settings handed to you by someone who would not have handed you any if he'd known what he was doing. This will never achieve as good a result as doing it yourself.
