Hello guys i was just woundering as i have a i7 930 fully boxed still with warranty would it come in usefull with my gaming pc build? i/e Would it still be able to run with a good GPU and RAM on bf3 ultra Perfectly fine? Just a quick question the save me money so i can spend a little more on that gpu :)

Yes but what im trying to say is...... Its DDR3-800/1066 Im wanting to run 1600 DDR3 Corsair 16gb ram :( and oc the cpu to a lot higher hehe

I'm using a i7 930 in my rig, granted overclocked to 4.00ghz with only 6gb of ddr3 1600 had a 5870 1gb plays everything fine just upgraded to 7970 windforce from 5870 plays bf3 great even the 5870 could play fine just about on ultra but use to play on high as better fps. I have another 6 gb of ram sitting in my mobo box unused from an rma not need it yet though.

Pretty sure most people with the older i7 CPUs run 1333Mhz at least... I'm confused why Intel has 800/1066 ram on their official page as I haven't seen any i7 system with ram that slow in it ever.

You might be better selling that CPU on auction or similar and buying a new Sandybridge i5 for gaming, especially if it's a new build and you need a new motherboard for example.

Yea But ive seen people using 1600 ofc But im sure u can only run the ram at that speed when its OCd I was thinking of using the I7 930 OC. Gigabyte G1 Sniper Motherboard, Socket 1366, DDR3, M-ITX, Intel X58. And 16gb of corsair ram plus a Gtx 680 :)

Id hazard a guess that 99% of people on here who own/owned a 920/30 etc were using 1600mhz ram. Used several 1600mhz kits in 6 and 12gb combinations here. The old i7's are still a pretty powerful cpu for a gaming rig.

Yes, I'm using a I7 930 Oc to 4Ghz with 6Gb of Corsair at 1600 (8,8,8,24, 2T) along with 2 x 7970s and i'm yet to find a game that tops out the CPU tbh.

You'll have no problem at all doing that. You can change the memory speed multiplier independently from the CPU. Note below how the FSB / DRAM multiplier changes here (without affecting the CPU multiplier)... http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/memory-scaling-i7,review-31600-3.html

However, the only real benefit of the 1600MHz rated RAM is that you can set the FSB at say 166 or 200 without having to underclock the RAM from it's default (hope that makes sense?)

should be no difference whatsoever between an i7 930 and the latest ivybridge cpu when it comes to gaming

tbh you only need 6gb tri channel ram or 8gb in dual channel mode, anymore ram than that might limit your cpu overclock as its hard or requires silly amounts of cpu vtt to get stable with 12gb or more memory

The only thing i can see being an issue is multi gpu with the latest generation of cards. I used to run gtx 470's in sli, now on a single gtx 670 wf. I will be adding a second card after a few months, but i reckon the cpu will be a slight bottleneck.

ahh so il have no problems in running bf3 in ultra ofc with a good card and stuff it just means i can spend more on a GPU as i have the i7 930 :D Athanor what cooler are u using and what temps are u getting? also if your a gamer Some Benchmarks please?

I play bf3 on an i7 920 @4ghz, a single overclocked gtx 670. Play the game on max settings, x4 msaa, i can get a steady 65fps at 1920x1200, dips to the mid 50's at times in vehicles.

Cheers for the Help Guys also What case shall i order of you for the G1 Sniper Mobo? unless u can recommend a better mobo that looks nicer aswell haha :) my color scheme is Green and black :)

stick with that mb,it uses the newer marvell sata3 ports/controllers,which just as fast as intel sata3

Good good cheers i wouldent be bottlenecking it with 1 of the newer top end GPUs would i?
also Any 1 reccomd me a case? Scence as my MB is Green and black im trying to keep it nice a tidy by staying with them colors?
