i am in the process of building a new Sandybridge PC.

A friend has offered me an i7 930 for cheap. I assume he means about $80 - $100.

So should i go ahead with the i5 build or maybe have a think about going the 1156 route.

The machine is for gaming of course.

Cheers guys.

I have an i7 930 and it is pretty quick, it's worth getting it if you have a stand alone graphics card. Mine also overclocked quite easily to over 4Ghz. If you can get it for cheap it definitely a good option.

Depends on what his idea of "cheap" is.

If it is a very good deal, for the price/performance ratio, go the 930 route (1366, not 1156), else stick with the sandy bridge build. The performance difference isn't exactly huge, and for gaming either is more than enough

Better off going the sandybridge route, that 2500k is quicker than the 930 big time and that's at stock. Socket 1156 is EOL, and Socket 1155 is new, if you want the more future proof option it has to be the sandybridge route;)
