Hi, just a quick one, been out the loop for a while and looking at buying an i7 setup. Is the only difference between the 930 and 920 a 1 in the multi!?

Thanks

Doesn't matter at all. Odd multipliers are almost always the most stable, so the 920 at x21 or the 930 at x22 means you'll run either of them at x21.

The 930 might only be available in D0 stepping, whereas the 920 D0 was much more popular than the 920 C1. If there's 60 quid between them you absolutely want the cheaper one, whichever that might be.

The stock of 920s is vanishing fast, OCuk seem to have run out now and so have some of the other retailers. Grab one quickly before they all go.

Most people seem to run it with turbo on, but turbo throttling disabled. This leaves you with a 920 chip which runs at x21.

Strictly speaking you're entirely correct however.

What do you mean jon by turbo throttling disabled? Im running 21 x 193 bclk on the p6t deluxe v2, ive read that turbo throttling can be an issue on this board, and it can be prevented by using a bios revision from the earlier v1 model of the board, havent experienced it myself in the time ive had this board though, but id be interested in your thoughts/opinion on this. Btw nice to see you back on again mate.;)

Cheers setter, was offline for a rather long time.

When the chip uses too much power, draws too much current, or runs too hot it throttles. The multiplier drops down to x20 for some fraction of a second. where the fraction approaches 1 as the chip is pushed harder.

Motherboards are meant to offer an option which prevents this, and someone on xs has written an application that tests to see whether this is working or not. I'm not that sure which options it is that stop this throttling.

I don't like the idea of the chip slowing down under stress, and don't really believe that the bios can fully prevent this. So I'm running at x20, with turbo off. Perhaps it's just paranoia, but x21 wouldn't run stable for me so its worked out well really.

Thanks jon, i seen that article on xs, my board is probably the most famous for turbo throttling, i used the real temp throtling monitor when stress testing, thankfully things went fine, though this old rig of mine is running very warm theese days, sli gtx 275's generate a hell of a lot of heat.
