i7 930 or i7 950?

Im confused which to go for.

The 930 has a lower frequency at 2.80GHz, the 950 is 3.06GHz.

But Ive read the 930 is more overclockable.

I was thinking of using this mobo: Asus P6X58D-E, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-399-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1692

Id be grateful for any help and advice.

Thanks.

From what I understand, they'll both overclock as far as each other - 4.0ghz+ depending on your chip.

The small advantage is that you can reach there with a lower BCLK on a 950 over the 930, due to its slightly higher multiplier.

Load of rubbish mate about the 930 being better, the 930 & 950 are the same chip o/c will just be down to the core it self, i guess the 950 should clock better as its a higher binned chip but your cutting close. Go with 950 if buying a new chip but not worth going from a 930 to 950 :)

they are both bloomfield cpus

they are identical apart from the multiplier.

they will clock the same

all bloomfields clock identically

920/930/950/960/975

all of them clock the same.

Ah I think I see, thanks for the replies. So same chip, but different default GHz speeds. So, correct me if Im wrong, therefore percentage clocks will be greater from a lower default, but the chips clock to the same absolute level (give or take a little, since I believe sometimes an individual (lucky) chip clocks loads). That a roughly accurate summary?

If so then the 950 looks like the one worth going for.

Yip you have got it spot on.

The 950 at the current price is a very good buy there is no two ways about that.

im confused by this on the odd occation some people claim the cant hit 4ghz so how do they clock the same? or did i misunderstnd? surely each chip clocks diff to another?

What he's saying is there's no difference between the different speed chips (apart from the multipliers). They all come off the same production line and get different badges stuck on them basically. Of course as with all CPUs there's some variation between individual chips though - there'll be good ones that clock well and bad ones that dont. But your odds of reaching 4GHz are essentially the same whether you buy a 920 or a 975.
