Hi,

Have been thinking of overclocking my CPU over the last few weeks.

Never overclocked before, so a complete novice. Have read a number of guides and how to's, so before jumping straight in I thought I'd see what sort of temps the CPU was reaching at stock.

Using RealTemp and IntelBurn I ran a 'Standard' stress test to see what was reached.

Here are my results: -

The thing that is a surprise to me is the fact that I reached 93c, or is this to be expected from running such a stress test?

My cooler is a Titan Fenrir Evo, the thermal compound used was Arctic Cooling MX-3 when I originally put the build together in 2010.

If it's not the norm, what should I check with regards to my setup to try and reduce these?

Any thoughts and advice/tips welcome.

Thanks & Regards

Sorry, if a Mod is available could the thread be moved to Overclocking & Cooling?

Think it's better suited in there.

Thanks

I'd say those are high temps even for a stock cooler, let alone a aftermarket one.

I'd look at reapplying the thermal paste/cooler. What volts are you using?

Hi & Thanks for the reply.

I've thought of re-applying the thermal paste and re-sitting the cooler to see if that drops them. Need to order some paste tomorrow.

Is there a quick way to see the volts?

Regards

Hi izzop

CPU-Z will show you in windows what volts you're using, but more accurately you should check your voltage.

Edit : Just seen your screenshot. Volts look fine. In fact, I'm running 1.24v on my i7 920 @ 3.6Ghz

Definitely look to re seat your cooler. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the heatsink and reapply.

Yeah. You have a serious temps problem there I would say.

Check voltage as advised. 1.25v should come in around 75-85 when your clocked to 3.7ishghz.

Check mounting, fans etc.

Please up with isopropyl. I have a spray can of it and it is awesome.

izzop, That's only showing your volts when your CPU is in a c0/similar state (hence the clock speed). Fire up the intel burn test, run it and then monitor CPU-z. You'll see the voltage spike up.

Regardless of that, and as lnoton thinks the same, you probably have a cooler mounting/paste issue and that's where you should look first.

Hi,

Whilst running IntelBurn it reaches 1.168V.

I agree with you both that I'm going to have to remove and re-sit the cooler before anything else.

Regards

Well I removed the cooler, and let's just say my original application of the compound left much to be desired.... should have taken a photo, but lets just say I found an area not much the size of a 10 pence piece, if that, in the centre of the CPU and it wasn't well spread at all.

Cleaned it up and re-applied some Artic MX-4 using the spread method and what a difference....

Did drop a *******, which I didn't notice until trying to re-fit the cooler fan. Couldn't work out how the clips would hold the fan on, only to stand back and look to discover I'd seated the cooler the wrong way round :(

Any way all done and running much cooler, although it's only been on for approximately an hour, so we'll see if the temps drop at all in time. Do they?
