Hi All,

As per subject really I have an i7 930 running at 4ghz ith a gigabyte x58 ud3r and gigabyte 7950. Would I see any tangible benefits in upgrading to haswell i5/i7. Main use of PC is games ???

Many thanks for any words of wisdom.

I went from a i7 950 @ 4.2Ghz to a 4770k @ 4.7Ghz, benchmarks say there's roughly a 50% increase in performance (particularly in single core applications), but what that 50% translates to in the real world I don't really know.

You'll probably notice the difference in some things, and not in others, probably more than placebo effect than anything.

One thing to note though - the new "Haswell" step up requires a socket change (even though they said it wouldn't), so it depends how much future proofing you want to do. Though let's face it, has anyone recently ever upgraded CPU without changing socket?

I was pleased with my i7 920 @ 4.0 until I finally changed it for a 3930k a few months ago. Running it at 4.5 and the difference is noticeable, everything just feels faster. Nothing I can quantify but I'm pleased I made the switch.

You'll really notice the difference in games that use 4 threads or less...... And games that only use 1-2 threads will REALLY benefit ( First Crysis game comes to mind )

I have almost the same system as OP. Never ever felt the need to upgrade. All games I play are constant 60fps so im happy. Biggest general use boost I saw in was when I got an SSD. Blazing fast compared to Mechanical drives

Thanks Chaps,

Probably what I already knew, in my heart of hearts ;-) Upgrade itch has got me lol.....

2nd monitor methinks instead then.

Many thanks for advice.

I've just upgraded from an i7 950 to a 4770k and for the games I play (arma mostly) I've seen a big jump in performance.

System in general seems snappier also.

Arma 3 is exactly what's giving me the itch. I get about 33fps maximum and that halves the longer a server has been online.
