Hi all

If i was to change my i7 940 to todays equivelant, what is it?

I then need to speculate a new build (changing ALL my current parts except the ssd and sound card)

limited in money but it has to be as good as my i7 940 or better not less

thanks

if you use it for gaming - a new GPU would be enough, and an SSD if you don't have one.

I do realise that, but computer might be giving up the ghost, so i am speculating at the moment, in case i have to change it

old browesr at the moment, becuase of problems so link isnt working properly

It's equivalent today is the i7 5930K.

Edit: if you're talking about equivalent performance, then probably the cheapest 4core+HT CPU available.

I'm not sure why everyone except Jokester assumed "todays equivalent" meant "the relative position of this chip in comparison to other extremely new processors"

It's... fairly clear (shiwarriors "like an I3" comment above confirms it) was meaning "what chip will give me similar performance". Jokesters comment about "whatever 4 core intel processor you can find" is about correct. Certainly not a £320 CPU...

Intel 4770S is about the cheapest 4 core you will find (new) at £240. You'd save more going to an i5, depends what it is used for though :)

Probably worth a look on the members market and pick up a 3570k + board when one comes up.

Edit: checking, there's plenty of em going, generally around the 100-150 mark.

if spending that money I think he wants to upgrade, not sidegrade (4770)...or even downgrade to i5 (HT)

otherwise he might as well keep the 940.

as I said before, may have to replace it, and thus i would get new, and im happy with the performance, so i wanted either the same performance or better, (for example paying £150 for an equivelent CPU in terms of gaming performance) or paing say £20 more if its going to get me a much better CPU, thats it

and if i am rplaceing it, id changed the motherboard to match the new CPU not sure what chipset it will be?)

Why would you blow money on something that is "as good as..". Are you referring to another machine you have or something?

What are the rest of your components, and what is your max budget, and your preferred budget please?

read my post just above yours its in there, thanks for the help

It's not that hard so not sure why it's being made so difficult.. an i5 6600k is going to be far from a side grade or downgrade but quite a big upgrade. I think it will be money well spent OP :)

So what you are saying is, equivalent to mine is basically a £150 CPU, but because im changing from an earlier model CPU, then I might as well spend another £50 and get the i5 6600k as its best bang for buck ? maybe not now but in say 2 years time or something ?
