i have 1 of said cpu's in my pc at the moment but it just started to run super hot idle 83 degrees and under load (GW2) 98 degrees. all my fans are working and are pretty much dust free so im assuming that the cpu is on its way out and so ive been looking to buy another so it will slip in to my rampage 2 extreme mobo.
ive looked on oc site but cant seem to find any so have they stopped selling these cpus for good (generally speaking)

Hi, yes if the heat sink has been knocked it could unsettle the paste contact, make sure your heat sink is not lose.

the paste is the only thing i have not checked as i didn't think the paste could cause such high temps as it had been working fine. thanks

it can if its old,it tends to dry up,wipe of the old with some kitchen towel and some alcohol if you have any and apply some new, just a tiny pea shaped blob and remount the heatsink

then see what the temps are like

Its definitely worth checking if the heatsink is properly seated. It might be worth getting an aftermarket cooler for the CPU if you're currently on the stock. My over bolted and over clocked i7 maxes at 80c in Prime 95 so something isn't right.

Which cooler are you using? Some of the older corsair all in one liquid coolers needed to be tightened after a while using them as the temperatures would go up over time.

had temps go through the roof lately too, found a bit of my cooler had somehow snaped dislodging it slightly! maybe i screwed it on too tight and it wore down eventually.
