So I've finally managed to get a hold of a i7 950 PC at work, and I want to try and get the maximum out of it, but I'm a bit limited on what I can spend on it, sadly.

It'll do 3.8-3.9Ghz stable on the stock cooler, but it's running too hot to push any higher, although I reckon the chip has more to give.

So what's the best air cooler for around £20-25 that'll help get that heat pushed out to the rear case fan and exhausted out? I'm currently thinking Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro V2 - anything better around the similar pricing? :)

I research this a while back and found the evo 212 to be getting good feedback.

I decided on that. For me it took my overclock from 4.1 on stock cooler to 4.4 on the evo. (i5 3570k 3.4Ghz). I could possibly push a lil more out of it but 4.5 Ghz on wards was just needing to much voltage and I was happy with 4.4 running about 10oC cooler than 4.1 on stock cooler.

I think my chip is not the best though.

Much depends on case clearance. What is the distance between surface of motherboard and case? Subtract 8mm from this and that is how tall the cooler can be. If the cooler fan is going to be over RAM, than the distance from top of RAM to case is the biggest fan that will fit over RAM. Also make sure the closest PCIe socket you are using is not too close to CPU. Most coolers using 120mm fans will fit, but not always.

There's plenty of case clearance, it's a full tower ATX case :)

The Evo 212 looks like a plan, may read a couple of reviews on it before ordering. Anything's got to be better than what's in now! :D

I had an i7 920D0 running at 4 GHz with a Cooler master Hyper 612S fitted which is a superb HSF. Kept the 920 nice and cool at about 35-40 degrees C during normal use. I now run a Xeon 5650 Hex Core at 4.2 GHz and the Hyper 612 is still doing a great job with temps sitting at around 18-24 degrees C at idle (these Xeon chips at 32nm rather than 45nm run amazingly cool). A bit pricey for your budget but I picked my 612S up in the MM so keep n eye on there and the bay for used examples. It's a tall cooler and I had to remove the heat spreaders from my Corsair Vengeance RAM to get it to fit but we'll worth it in the end.
