Hi, I'm new to this and immensely paranoid - at the moment I don't want to overclock, I'd like a stable system first :D

I've just installed an I7-950 with stock heatsink and fan on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R mobo and the temperatures I'm getting whilst observing them in BIOS after 10 minutes are:

CPU 40 degress C
MCH 37 degrees C

The Intel manual states it requires an ambient temp of 38 degrees C.

Do those temps sound too high?

Current temps look ok, what are they like at full load with Prime 95 or Intel Burn test.

With the stock heatsink I believe you wont get to far!!

Thanks for the reply, at the moment installing Windows 7, all motherboard LEDs are currently off, I'm hoping that the Antec 1200 case I'm using will buy me some time until I buy that replacement heatsink. This is my first upgrade since my Intel P4 640, long overdue.
