i recently swapped over from my fx 6300 and 970 mobo to my old i7 950 and rampage board clocked to 3.6 atm to see if i get better performance but the only problem is that according to core temp the idle temp is between 44 and 50
where as my fx was very very low like i dont remember exact numbers but i think it was around 20 its annoying as the fan is pretty loud just when idle at desktop any ideas?

FX CPUs have very low idle temps. It's when you start stressing the cores that they get hotter. The I7 950 was a notoriously hot CPU. I used to have one and it would idle 50c and max out at 89c, just about in range @ 4ghz. That was on a Noctua NH-D14 too. If you want to overclock then know that you're going to have to put up with very high temps and load wattages too. They're hot and they eat power.

I would bench both CPUs tbh. I'm going to stick my neck out here and say they'd be around dead level. Then make an informed decision on which works out better for you :)

Have you checked the cooler mounting, and how much thermal paste on it. I never owned a 950 but had a920 and still have a 930. Both of which idled in the mid30's at 4.2ghz, high 60's under intel burn test on the 920 under my current k2 which is similair to a D14. The 930 maxed at 76c under a smaller thermalright ultra extreme. At their time the bloomfields were considered warm, but theyre nowhere near as hot as more modern intel chips such as ivybridge and haswell.
