Quick question; I've got an i7 950 with a Thermaltake Thrio cooler.
At the moment it's running at stock speed.
The CPU is idling about 42°C. The CPU fan speed is controlled through the motherboard. At this temperature, the CPU fans are not running.
Can I assume this is a good idle temp for this CPU?

Usually when the cpu get too hot, the fan would speed up if they are pwm and slow during idle.

The fan should be running when idle. You sure its not broken? Idle temp should be low 30c.

What's been said above. My 920 and 980 both idle at 25-30c under whatever cooler with fan idling around 700rpm. I found turning fans off at idle was fine but motherboard components ran hotter.. couldn't hear the fans at 700rpm anyway so keep them running.

Which Frio is it?

What are the temps inside our case? Maybe you need better case airflow to lower case temps. if I turn off my cooler fans CPU's idle at 32-37c under Silver Arrow, Silver Arrow SB-E or TC14PE coolers.. they only run 43-50c @ 900-1000rpm under 100% load rendering graphics. ;)

This is the cooler as far as I know. Looks the same anyway, I didn't realise they did different versions. http://uk.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001600

The fans do kick in when it gets hotter, so I'm sure everything is working OK, just not sure if it should be a little cooler when idle?
I don't mind the having them run slowly when on idle, but if they don't need to be going, I'd rather keep the noise down.

Does anyone know what the max it should be at full load? I'll stress test it later and report back what it gets to. I read that these run warm, and 100° is the max, but surely I only want to see about 80° don't I?

Thanks

Frio are okay cooler but I've heard they are a little louder than most.

I keep mine below 70c. Some say 80c is safe but when I'm rendering CPU is 100% for 20-30minutes, drops for a few seconds and right back up to 100%.. and this can go on for many hours at a time so I figure 70c is better. ;)

IIRC 100c is when they automatically start throttling themselves.

I've just ran IBT. I'm not sure what temp sensor to look at. The CPU cores, or the CPU itself (Using the Everest gadget). Please see screenshot. I think these temps are fine. If you agree I'll hunt for an overclocking guide :)

you normally use the cpu cores to tell how hot it is so a maximum of 75c is fine.

Yes the temps are fine now but will not be if you overclock. I would not want them to be any higher than they are now.. and if you overclock they will go higher.
