Hi I am thinking of buying the above CPU, supposedly new, for near £100 and I am unsure whether it is a reasonable buy given one is limited to the 1366 boards which are becoming scarce and new ones are quite expensive. My main interests are in audio processing, and photo editting. Is this a sensible purchase given that they are now out of production.

If I were to get the cpu I am thinking of using it in an ASUS P6T Pro Workstation. Would this be a sensible option or should I look to one of Asus's later boards.

Any advice appreciated.

do you have the board already? if not your better off putting the extra for a z77 board/i7 3570k imo

No wazza I have neither the board or the cpu yet. I won cpu on ebay but there is a hitch with verification of seller. Once this is cleared I will possibly purchase - deal seems potentially iffy. This was a spur of the moment New Years eve bid and I hadnt realised the 960/1366/X58 format was now abandoned by intel. Even so at £100 new it seems reasonable. Board available new at £130 so as a bundle still does not appear too bad. Problem is obsolence of form factor really.

well see how it goes, its not a bad cpu at all its just why bother with old tech if you can get new tech for a little more £

boards to go for are the gigabyte x58 ud oc i think its called its orange and black colour, only reson i recommend that one is it has the later marvell sata3 ports which are just as quick as the new intel sata3 ports found on sb/ib boards, which is a plus if you plan on using a sata3 ssd, youll see full speeds

idk what asus boards have those controllers, mostly they are the poor performing older marvell sata3 ports

you can pick up a cheap dual channel 1600mhz ram kit and run dual channel rather than tri channel if you wanted too 8gb should be plenty

depends if you really need the HT of an i7. a 3570k would be stronger all round, but like 50% more expensive.

But when you take into account the motherboard aswell, it is only £26 dearer, so definatly worth going for the newer i5 and Z77 board im my honest oppinion.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £179.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-DS3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £75.98
Total : £255.97 (includes shipping : FREE).

If you don't have to buy it, I would cancel it and buy new. At least then you also have peace of mind, for all you know that CPU has been run hard for years already.

It is actually supposedly a new cpu. I have actually had to cancel due to work committments preventing me from completing. I wouldn't have considered it if it wasn't a new cpu which at that price seemed irresistible. Even so 1366 motherboards are all getting long inthe tooth and still very pricey

You are much better of getting the i5 Ivybridge CPU and a cheap motherboard.

The price will be very similar, yet you'll get the latest tech rather than 4 year old tech.

The speed at stock will be fairly similar, yet when overclocked Ivybridge will be faster - whilst using nearly half the power and with the benefit of native USB3 and SATA3.
