I guess I could hold out for the new mid-end amd card but otherwise I think it has to be the 970. 980 is pushing my budget, 290 runs hot for a small case (?), 960/285 are soon to obsolete with 2gb vram (?).
 
Yes there isn't much choice for affordable, cool and quiet running but powerful GPUs for small cases.

One good thing I guess is that the 970 will hold reasonable value should something more suitable come along in the next 6-12 months. I'm waiting on full fat Maxwell for my Ncase M1 build, meanwhile my 750ti copes admirably at 1920x1200 with appropriate game settings.
 
My current system is a phenom ii with a 660. So it's 'ok' for most things.

But I do play strategy games (ck2, distant worlds, civ) more than anything else so the cpu feels it's age at times.

I could probably drop the cpu to 4690 but future strategy games might benefit from the i7 (thinking galciv 3).
