I've got the i7 2600k in my system (full spec in my sig)

I've got a load of different monitoring software running, Core Temp, CPU Usage, Touch Bios, CPU-Z

I've messed around in the Bios looking for a stable clock (anything from 3.4 to 4Ghz) Now I'm running stock at 3.4Ghz (until my H100 arrives) but CPU Usage's realtime clock speed keeps jumping from 1566Mhz at idle, to 5000ish for a split second, then back down to 1566Mhz, even though all I'm running is Firefox, the ram usage is at 25% (8GB total ram)

The core temps aren't even high, they're idle at 32-40, max is 60 when I'm running benchmarks, but whats going on with my system?

Is it just CPU Usage going mental or is my i7 jumping from 1.5Ghz to 5Ghz for a reason?

what power saving software or settings have you got turned on?

just like the OLD amd cool and quiet software for the original athlons back in 2003 it would turn the frequency of the cpu down to save power and keep the processor cool and only let the full power of it out and usable when gaming or using high powered software etc.

check the power options in windows and turn off any energy saving crap you have.!

I wouldnt call it crap, it helps save on electricity. Also, it doesnt make the overclock unstable as im using with my I5 2500k @ 4.5ghz. Goes down to 1.6ghz and then max when I need it :)

Intel SpeedStep is kicking in. On idle it drops the clocks to 1.6ghz. Don't worry about it, it's perfectly normal. When the CPU is on load it will ramp back up to full overclock speeds.

It seems to jump to 5Ghz even when it's only overclocked to 4Ghz though, just randomly, I put it down to crappy software

Which software were you using that made it jump to 5ghz. (I noticed you mentioned a few, so wondering if it was just one piece or all of them)
