Hey all, just in the process of installing my new i7 system and am a little confused.

I'm mounting the i7 920 into the socket on a gigabyte ga-ex58-ud5 and the cpu doesnt seem to fit down flush with the top of the socket. It looks approx 1/2 a mm high all round, not just one area. This means when i try to close the load plate it doesnt sit down flat before the lever would have to be clamped. I obviously dont want to break anything, but does it just need pressure or what? Obviously havent puit any pressure on it yet as never needed to on any other pc builds ive done, although all were AMD.

Help would be great, thanks!

I'm guessing it could be to do with the 4 screws around the cpu, i would loosen these off to make it sit higher but I'm not sure thats the right answer?

Might be a silly suggestion but make sure you have got the CPU the right way round in the socket. I almost put mine in incorrectly as its not really clearly marked.

As said make sure its in the right way, there is a cut out each side.

Mine needed a worrying amount of pressure to close the lever down and I have done loads of 775 sockets, the 1366 did seem to need more to lock it down.

Its definately the correct way around, all lined up etc. It has a very small amount of play in the socket but not much. If I was to apply more pressure where would I push as it were? The sides of the metal core like the load plate would?

Just fitted an i7 into the same motherboard myself. It did need fair bit of force to close the lever, but so has every other CPU I've ever put into a socket that has the same system.

Double check that the chip's the right way round, and that you've got no bent pins on the socket and if that's good, just keep pushing the end of the lever and it'll go.

If you look at the pins on the socket, they're like little springs that push against the chip (that's why it's raised slightly when it's just resting on them) and 1366 of them pushing at once will amount to a fair bit of force you have to overcome.

Yep basically got it sorted now, spoke to ocuk technical support who were ace and just said push it harder :)

Went in fine and now just finishing off the build, the noctua is a beast!
