A friend of mine recently purchased a i7 devils canyon and the temperature he's getting on idel are in the high 40 -50 mark we've reseated the h80i twice and it's still getting hot this is just at the default clock speed , could it be he's got a faulty cpu ?

Thanks in advance

What's the CPU voltage at, also is the motherboard using the latest bios version? Some early versions would use too high a voltage at stock. Also does the pump on the cooler sound ok.

You got the latest bios for the Ranger board? >> http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_RANGER/HelpDesk_Download/

Got news from overclockers today.

Surprise, surprise:

Details: Overheating
Status: This item's processing is finished.
Outcome: Replaced

Hopefully no more bad batches. Browsing the internet, a lot of people seem to be having problems with it. Others say it's normal and that you need a good water cooler if you want this chip cold. Wrong!

The truth is, Intel ****ed up with this version; they should have soldered it. Some people are getting normal temps while others think it's okay for them to be that high even at turbo 4.4Ghz. It isn't.

You shouldn't have to de-lid your CPU to make it operate properly. The reason why I'm paying so much money (almost double of an AMD chip), is for them to do the job properly.

Did you get a replacement CPU and retest this?

From what I recall the 4790k still was not really fixed, intel still used rubbery gunk under the heatplate, I have a 4790k which has had been delid and its been cleaned up and some fresh artic mx paste and am getting 35c roughly while surfing/basics right now with a Prolimatech Armageddon CPU Cooler.

This is using a 120mm fan which barely rotates though if I put the fan on full speed could perhaps reduce it much lower.

yeah it wasnt fixed with devils canyon. still !"£$% paste... I delided mine too and temps dropped by 10C in average accross all the cores.

The two DC chips I've had ran even hotter than the 4770k I had. Intel told a bit of a pork pie about them running cooler.

Delid & Liquid Pro will sort you out. I was in the same boat with idle 50's and loads above 90 but now I'm idle in the 20's and maxing at 60 with H80i. :)

I wont lie, it feels pretty good. :D
