i7 Gaming Rig

Hi,

Looks good to me, although, someone on Corsair's support forum told me that if you run 2 x 6GB sets of RAM it is very unlikely that they will manage to run at their rated speed, and you usually have to lower their frequency in order to have a stable system, for instance, if you have 2 x 6GB 1600MHz sets of RAM, you would probably have to run them @ 1333MHz..

Whereas if you purchase a 12GB set of RAM they will be guaranteed to run at their rated speed...

However, I am only quoting what someone else told me, I cant say for sure if this is the case...

That 12gb set has a rated speed of 1333mHz anyway though.... I'd rather get 2 sets of 6gb of corsair than the budget OCZ stuff at double the price

Unless you have a specific program that benefits from 12gb, i think 6 would be better. More likely to slow your system down than speed it up. I should add I mostly deal with more mid range systems though.

I know those OCZ were rated @ 1333MHz, I only posted them as an example, but there are 12GB sets running @ 1600MHz available...

I am sure there are Corsair 12GB sets out there to...

What is a D0 i7. I've seen it around and I saw it in your sig and wondered if it was different to a normal one, or even if it is the normal one. Also what is the advantage of Corsair over OCZ seeing as Corsair is more expensive. Thanks.

D0 is just the latest stepping of the i920, they are better for overclocking that the C0/C1 stepping i7's...

As for Corsair and OCZ RAM, I have used both Corsair and OCZ RAM over the years, and I like them both...

You also get cheaper Corsair RAM (XMS3 series) that is around the same price as the OCZ Platinum and Gold series...

Corsair Dominators are also starting to drop in price as well, when I bought mine they were £175 for 6GB, whereas now you can get them for £121, and I only bought mine about 2 months ago...

I also have 3GB of Corsair XMS3 series 1333MHz RAM, although I haven't had a chance to try them out because my CPU is being RMA'ed ATM...

I only bought the 3GB set to test on my system because I was experiencing lots of crashes with my rig, and I suspected the Dominator RAM was causing the problem, so I bought the 3GB set to see whether it was my RAM or not, but I got the exact same problems with both sets of RAM...

Thanks. I've just decided to replace the CPU, CPU cooler, RAM and motherboard with a bundle from overclockers that is pre overclocked to 4GHz. I'm going for it because I haven't really had any experience of overclocking and I don'y want to start out on my brand new system. I'm hoping that it's still ok with the rest of my system.

THanks I'm gonna go with the 640GB RAM. I'm also going to go with the 1000W Corsair PSU now because I'm going to buy a cheap 9600GT to run PhysX on my games.

I'm (still) waiting to purchase my i7 system. I would recommend PC Power & Cooling instead of the corsair. They're known to be more reliable.
